4.0 out of 5 stars Great artwork and Fun story.
Worth your time and money (through amazon.com of course) if you're even a casual X-Men fan. If you prefer the softcover, wait a few more months.

Phil Jimenez is the artist - he is one of the best, detailed, great to look at. He did some Amazing Spider-Man issues I recommend that are available thru amazon.com as well. Again, great solid art work...

I was hoping Warren Ellis would step up his game after the last story arc but I really didn't get into this story anymore than I did Ghost Box. Phil Jimenez art was very nice (with some amazing character renditions) but this story didn't do a whole lot for me either. The story is fun too - uses some of the X-Men mythos to it's advantage. Overall, New X-Men through Astonishing X-Men have been some of the best X-Men stories in recent years.

Recommended.

Most of my praise for the series, post-Whedon, has been for art. Simon Bianchi and Phil Jiminez have done a great job in Cassaday's absence. Warren Ellis, however, is failing hardcore. Ghost Box was ok, but this is just the most uninteresting X-book I've ever read. The whole plotline about a useless mutant going after the x-men by reanimating corpses didn't go far at all. It could have been great if Ellis's beats weren't so embarassing. He tried to replicate the humor from the original series, and it just falls completely flat. I lost interest halfway through and let myself be entertained by the pictures instead. While never being able to mirror the quality of Whedon's Astonishing X-men, Ellis's AXM is just a bad series by itself. My only desire to read this book, comes from me loving the characters and the line-up. But Warren doesn't do anything interesting with them. I know he's better than this. Hello? Extremis? Channel that energy you had before into something fun for the X-men.

Please do what the people at the comic store begged me to do. Move on with your life and forget about Astonishing X-men. There's nothing left here.
