Astonishing X-Men: Torn, the third in a series of motion-comic releases based on the story arc of the same name by Joss Whedon (Avengers) and artist John Cassaday, picks up where its predecessor, Dangerous, left off in its struggle for the heart and mind of Emma Frost. The former White Queen, having been revealed as under the sway of a newly formed Hellfire Club fronted by Sebastian Shaw, Cassandra Nova, Perfection, and Negasonic Teenage Warhead, is now carrying out their scheme to unmoor the X-Men by implanting false memories and fears into their minds. Whedon does a fine job of balancing the humor and drama of the X-Men under psychic attack, with Wolverine cowering at the sight of a now-feral Beast, while Cyclops agonizes over a childhood trauma as well as the idea of a fling with Frost during his relationship with Jean Grey. The depth of the writing meshes well with Cassaday's original artwork, much of which is reproduced for the feature; Torn will probably not change motion-comic detractors' opinion of the format, but the action moves smoothly during its 81-minute running time, which does much to make up for the lack of supplemental features. --Paul Gaita

5.0 out of 5 stars I Finally Liked A Motion Comic & Total X-Mind Freak August 26, 2012
In the past, when I've read the comic itself, the motion comic simply did nothing for me. Thankfully, I hadn't read all of this Astonishing X-Men run. I will say that the opening scenes with the monolithic Sentinel in the jungle was quite stunning on a widescreen. And there was only one slip in stop-motion animation (when Emma Frost's clock moves side to side with such a mechanical quality that it looked like a paper cut out with an unseen hand simply tipping this way, that way, this way, that way . . .). But the story of Kitty Pryde's comeuppance was awesome, and, since I hadn't read this, I was blown away by the Kitty-Colossus child deal. I won't say more for fear of ruining this for someone else who hasn't read it. It was pretty awesome stuff. And then the whole mind manipulation in a bottle that expands to the size of a universe was Joss Whedon at his best. You get to see some very serious and seriously funny and even scary moments, here. And the lesser known X-children get some very nice scenes. And I finally was in awe of the vocal performance in one of these motion dvds. You can truly sit back and just listen to the rich quality of these voices and be stunned at their talent. This is a great story, and it was nice to finally appreciate one of these. Again, if you've already read the comics, the impact will be less, I imagine. But I purchased this for ten greenbacks, and I don't think you can go wrong at that price.

Joss Whedon's time at the helm of Astonishing X-Men created an epic story arc. This DVD is the third installment (after Astonishing X-Men - Gifted (Marvel Knights) and Astonishing X-Men - Dangerous (Marvel Knights) ) in the motion comic adaptation of the brilliant run on comics. The adaptations are nearly scene for scene and word for word animated versions of the comics. This third volume is probably the most fascinating so far because so much of the action comes from within the character's personalities: A psychic attack preys on the character's worst fears. Beast becomes a beast; Wolverine becomes a weakling.

This installment also explores the character's relationships: Emma and Scott--and Jean, Kitty and Peter. The scripting is amazingly tight and the episodes are tense. If the episodes didn't have credits every fifteen minutes or so, it would be seamless nearly hour and a half long feature.

This DVD has it all. Humor when Wolverine is brain-fried back to childhood. Romance when Kitty and Colossus finally have time to get to know eachother. And action, lots of action: Aliens, girlfight, SWORD, Hellfire Club.

The only thing the DVD doesn't have is a decent case. The disc comes in a slimcase with a cardboard front; it doesn't even snap closed.

I can wholeheartedly recommend this DVD (and really all the Astonishing x-men motion comics) to any fan of the X-men.
