The Astra 1220U features an optical resolution of 600 x 1200 dpi, expandable to a maximum resolution of 9600 x 9600, with single-pass scanning for speed and quality color balance. Additionally, it features 36-bit color quality output with UMAX' proprietary Bit Enhancement Technology (BET).

In addition to supporting the iMac or USB-compatible Macintosh systems, the Astra 1220U is also compatible with PCs running Microsoft Windows 95 or 98. With its USB interface for easy plug-and-play installation and compatibility with both Mac and PC systems, the Astra 1220U offers small business and home users a high-quality, robust scanning solution at a very affordable price.

The Astra 1220 products scan photographs, artwork, graphics, 3D objects or any document up to an 8.5" x 11.7" maximum scanning area. Utilizing a charge coupled device (CCD), the UMAX scanners bring out the richness and precision of the original image and offer long scanner life. This makes the scanners ideal for web graphics, newsletter artwork, customer presentations and proposals, school reports, and much more. An optional transparency adapter is also available.

The scanner also includes a robust software bundle, making it the perfect tool for all scanning needs. Users can incorporate photos into Web pages, personalized greeting cards and calendars with the award-winning Adobe PhotoDeluxe. The Astra 1220 also includes Presto! PageManager from NewSoft for complete document management and Caere Omnipage LE OCR for optical character recognition. The Astra 1220U is fully TWAIN compliant and utilizes the UMAX VistaScan driver which provides an easy to use interface for first time users and advanced settings for more experienced users who want extensive control over the scanning environment. Additionally, the UMAX Copy Utility allows documents to be scanned directly to a printer, turning the scanner into a black and white or color copier.

If you're a Mac user, forget this one (and all Umac products). They don't intend to provide drivers for Mac OS X.

Will not work with XP despite downnloaded drivers and patches. Umax wants to sell new drivers but I'm not willing to risk more time and money on something that Umax should be supporting without cost. Trash day is Tuesdays here if you are pre-XP and looking for a deal on a scanner.

I'm not sure where the product has come, but I own a UMAX 1220S scanner and was absolutely apalled (to coin an old term) to find that I could not download an appropriate driver for WinXP to run it. If it weighed a few pounds more, I could at least use it for a boat anchor!

I don't have the heart to try and peddle it to the next sucker. So chalk this up to the "shame on me" category for making the purchase. I echo the sentiment of other reviewers. DO NOT BUY.. and send a message. I've been in the computing industry for nearly 20 years, and this is the FIRST review that I've felt compelled to submit. Shame on UMAX. I hope the owners have made their keep and can live with their decisions.
