I just started DE shaving, and initially started doing it as a way to save money, but I'm really starting to believe that they work much better than the extremely expensive cartridges. I started with a sample pack and the Astra were the only ones that didn't leave me with wicked razor bumps under my neck and chin. They were the best ones out of the bunch, and I really enjoyed the ritualistic feeling of wet shaving, as opposed to dry shaving which I had been doing since I was a teenager. Anyway, the value of the Astra razors is really good and I like using them, but I'm also reviewing because I found the absolute best hack for using them.

My buddy is a barber and he taught me that using just a little bit of tea tree oil on your razor makes them a) last longer b) prevent razor bumps and c) work as a bit of a moisturizer if you get the right brand. I stole this brand TreeActiv+ Tea Tree Oil Acne Solution for Advanced Acne Treatment - All Natural Acne Spot Treatment - Blemishes Gone or Your Money Back! from my sister, but eventually wore down and bought my own because I like it so much. The tea tree oil works as an antibacterial product, preventing the mini-infections known as ingrown hairs. It also worked well with keeping my face smooth after I had finished shaving. Since the oil worked I also bought the TreeActiv Anti Acne & Rosacea Treatment Sulfur Mask Plus Rhassoul, Bentonite Clay Mask with Witch Hazel & Aloe Vera - Refreshing Lemon Scent (1 Jar) to use as a face scrub, and this essentially got rid of all my skin problems.

When I dumped my electric razor about a year ago, I bought a sample pack of DE blades featuring all the well-known brands. After experimenting with them all I kept coming back to Astra platinum. They leave my face baby-smooth and don't cause the red, irritated bumps that some of the other blades left behind. Astra has since been my one and only brand. Now, that being said, just because these blades are perfect for my face does not mean they will be perfect for yours. Your face may be better suited to Derby, Merkur, Feather, etc. My recommendation if you're new to wet shaving: start with a sample pack and find the blade that works best for you.

Let me start out by saying that a blade that works great for me, may or may not work for you and a blade that works great for you may or may not work for me. There are so many variables that one cannot possibly predict which blades will work for them. That is exactly why you want to try different blades to find which ones work well for you. This is exactly why you will see 5 star reviews along with 1 star reviews for the same blade. Take a look at how many good reviews vs. bad reviews a particular blade gets. If a blade is getting more good than bad reviews then you stand a better chance of that blade working for you, if it gets more bad reviews than good then perhaps you stand less of a chance it will work for you. But this is just an example of the law of averages. The bottom line is you have to try different blades to see which ones work well for you. Period!

I have a collection of about a dozen different de razors and a blade that works well in one razor may not work so well in another razor since each razor presents the blade just a bit differently than another razor. Just another of the variables you will encounter in wetshaving.

When I started wetshaving with a double edge razor I started with an Edwin Jagger DE89 razor and Merkur blades and used that one razor and one type of blade for about 6 weeks whilst developing my technique with this type of razor. Only then did I start trying different brands of blades. Some were worse, some were better. When I tried an Astra SP I was amazed at how smooth of a shave I was getting from these blades. I have tried Astra SP's in several different razors with varying results but always good results. One of my favorite combinations of razor and blade is a Gillette 40's style SuperSpeed razor with an Astra SP blade.

(My review of the Astra blade is contained herein.)

Here's how to shave: Think of two possible end results: They are (to use the phrases you see on the forums) a “Smooth as a Baby's Bottom Shave” (BBS for short – 3 passes), and a “Socially Acceptable Shave” (SAS – 2 passes).

Are you getting married today? Consider doing a 3-pass BBS. For the other 99% of your life, do a 2-pass SAS shave.

Also (and this will sound like heresy to some): You don't need to use a shaving brush. Why? Because it's wasteful, and not worth the effort.

Most important things to remember:
- Hydrate your facial hair before cutting it. The best time to shave is after a shower – it is believed that human hair is harder to cut than copper of the same width. Hydrating the hair makes it way easier to cut.
- Keep your blade bone-dry between usages. Loosen the razor, dry the blade with a hair dryer, and keep it in another room away from moisture. Corrosion is the biggest factor in blade degradation.

Here is how I shave:
- Shower
- On damp face, apply a light layer of fragrance-free Lubriderm lotion (layer 1)
- Wet face with hot water (layer 2)
- With fingers, apply Kiss My Face fragrance-free Moisture Shave (layer 3)
- Make first pass. Remind yourself that this first pass is a rough draft.
-- I use a Merkur Long Handled Safety Razor (simple, easy to grip when wet)
-- Astra is my preferred blade, the best balance between sharpness and smoothness that I've found. I also like PolSilver Super Iridium. I've tried Feather (ultra-sharp, but unforgiving), Derby (awful - stay away), Merkur (too dull), CVS house brand (not at all bad, actually), and a couple others I've forgotten.
- Mentally repeat the word “light, light, light...
