These are sharp and give a very smooth shave.

Assuming you can also get 3-5 shaves per blade, you will get consistently good shaves for 2-4 cents a day.

I've tried different blades ( i.e Feather, Merkur and others) but the Astra are by far the best.

When I dumped my electric razor about a year ago, I bought a sample pack of DE blades featuring all the well-known brands. After experimenting with them all I kept coming back to Astra platinum. They leave my face baby-smooth and don't cause the red, irritated bumps that some of the other blades left behind. Astra has since been my one and only brand. Now, that being said, just because these blades are perfect for my face does not mean they will be perfect for yours. Your face may be better suited to Derby, Merkur, Feather, etc. My recommendation if you're new to wet shaving: start with a sample pack and find the blade that works best for you.

Let me start out by saying that a blade that works great for me, may or may not work for you and a blade that works great for you may or may not work for me. There are so many variables that one cannot possibly predict which blades will work for them. That is exactly why you want to try different blades to find which ones work well for you. This is exactly why you will see 5 star reviews along with 1 star reviews for the same blade. Take a look at how many good reviews vs. bad reviews a particular blade gets. If a blade is getting more good than bad reviews then you stand a better chance of that blade working for you, if it gets more bad reviews than good then perhaps you stand less of a chance it will work for you. But this is just an example of the law of averages. The bottom line is you have to try different blades to see which ones work well for you. Period!

I have a collection of about a dozen different de razors and a blade that works well in one razor may not work so well in another razor since each razor presents the blade just a bit differently than another razor. Just another of the variables you will encounter in wetshaving.

When I started wetshaving with a double edge razor I started with an Edwin Jagger DE89 razor and Merkur blades and used that one razor and one type of blade for about 6 weeks whilst developing my technique with this type of razor. Only then did I start trying different brands of blades. Some were worse, some were better. When I tried an Astra SP I was amazed at how smooth of a shave I was getting from these blades. I have tried Astra SP's in several different razors with varying results but always good results. One of my favorite combinations of razor and blade is a Gillette 40's style SuperSpeed razor with an Astra SP blade.

I've been DE shaving for over a year now, and when I started I purchased a sampler pack. I know everyone has different needs and preferences, but I found these to be excellent for sensitive skin. They work great in my old Gillette Adjustable razors, but these really started to shine with my new Edwin Jagger D89LBL. What a combo. 2 pass shave, smooth as can be! And for under $15.00, I use them for 2 shaves and move on. So, let's see, $14.00/100= 14 cents a piece/2 = 7 cents a shave. Ummm, sorry multiblade junk, I'll be buying these from now on.

November 2013 update: Just went through first box, added second. I feel like Charlie opening the Willie Wonka candy bar each time a get a new razor ready. I only use them 2x's, still a great value!!!

I am revewing 5 different DE blades in one which seems off topic yeah... but I think is appropriate so you can get a feel for how this specific blade performs or stacks up to the competition. A little pre-info, I use an Edwin Jagger DE89BL razor and EJ best badger brush with Lucky Tiger aftershave, and either proraso sensitive shaving soap or Dr Harris Lavender shaving soap (I like them both). Sometimes I use a dot of cocoa butter lotion with the lucky tiger if my skin is feeling particularly dry (but usually I like that lucky tiger does not leave much moisturizing behind though as my skin is typically not dry)..

So to the review. I purchased a variety pack containing blades from the following: merkur, personna platinum israeli red version, astra premium platinum, derby, and feather hi stainless.

Here is how I feel after having used up all 5 packs.

Feather: Definitely the sharpest by far, but not my favorite. Seems to easily dig into my skin regardless of my angle or pressure. Really slides through the hair but makes my skin feel unhappy after.

Merkur: Very middle ground. A little too much resistance but all around solid blade if you get a good price or they are your only option.

Astra: I didn't like these very much. Didn't like the way the drag on my face feels or the shave I get from them.

Personna Red Israeli version: My favorite blades, pretty sharp, glides over face nicely, leaves me with no razor burn. A little more expensive though and hard to get on amazon sometimes.

Derby: Solid performer, I don't like them quite as much as the personna reds but they are better for me than merkur and the ones I choose to purchase because they are wicked cheap on a lot of sites.

I have been DE shaving for 3 years now and really got into it as a college student looking for a cheaper alternative to the expensive cartridge razors. I am currently purchasing my 2nd set of 100 Astra SP blades, almost exactly 2 years after my first box, so that gives you an idea of how long they last/how often I shave. I usually try to switch blades every 3 to 4 shaves, but I have razors that I use for travel and/or keep at home and school, so I'm sure I've gone many more than 4 shaves on some blades without knowing it. Probably less than 5 times have I ever actually noticed that a blade was getting dull and pulling hairs a little, so you could probably carry most blades out to 4+ shaves if you really felt like it, but a $10 investment for 2+ years (still have a few left) isn't too bad, even for me. In conclusion, these blades are well worth the money, but as anyone from B&B knows, your mileage may vary. Everyone's face reacts differently to certain blades and every blade acts different in each razor. I list the razors I commonly use these blades with below, in addition to other blades I have tried. Take all this for what you paid, as it is just my own unbiased experiences.

Razors I use with Astra SP blades:
Gillette Tech (WW2 era), Gillette Travel Tech, Gillette Ball-End Tech, 1954 Gillette Super Speed, $2 Rimei razor (off Amazon, great razor for the money IMHO) and I have used a Gillette Slim Adjustable with these blades, though it wasn't mine.

The only other blade I currently stock for myself is Derby blades. They are definitely not as sharp as Astra SP blades, but that is why I have them. I use them in a Dovo Shavette just because every now and then I like to practice my straight razor technique.
