Washington are three young guys 20 and 21 years old who have played together since 1998. The band is made up of Rune Simonsen at vocals and guitar, Andreas Hoyer plays bass and hum's along here and there, while Esko Pedersen handles the drums. Way back when Washington went under the name Gorgeous they where known as a "Radiohead" band, a band with great qualities, but with specific references. But with the change of the name, a new specific sound developed as well. It's low-fi and close, it's a bit obscure, it's fantastic, it's sad and it is immensely beautiful. It"s vocals, guitar, bass and drums. Calm and relaxed, and with enough dynamics to make you fall out of your chair. In January 2003, just as their first EP Black Wine was ready mixed and mastered, Washington were picked up by the Oslo based label Bauta Records, a division of the highly acclaimed Tuba Records. By the time Black Wine was released in May 2003, Washington had already started the recording of their debut album. It was completed in the spring of 2004, with a Norwegian release in August 2004. The album entitled A New Order Rising received great reviews in Norway and subsequently gathered interest outside of Norway. Since the debut-release Washington have been touring heavily all over Europe. Now they are back with their second album!

Having caught my first video glimpse of this band from Norway at the Norwegian Wood Festival, I was pleasantly surprised at the power and melancholicness of this album. I would have liked to hear some of the music in Norwegian, but all in all, I was pleased at it's production. It's a shame they don't have the retail sales backing here in the US. Though they have been around for 12 years, they're a virtually unheard of group here. I hope to see them get more airtime in the future. A great album regardless.
