3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre Movie License Game With a Few Strong Points August 18, 2012
Platform for Display:PlayStation2
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Amazingly the Playstation 2 platform received not one but two action games based on the Astro Boy franchise: the first from Sega back in 2004 and this, the second from D3 Publisher in 2009. The former is based upon the classic comics/ animated series while this game is based upon the 2009 computer animated film. As I have never played the Sega version, I'm unable to compare the two titles.

The premise of this game is undeniably simplistic: Players take on the role of the iconic hero and take to the streets and skies in effort to save Metro City from the clutches of the evil President Stone and his robot army. Rather than rely upon digitized scenes of the film itself to advance the plot, Astro Boy the Video Game kind of goes its own way by taking settings and characters from the movie and extending them into entire (albeit repetitive) levels of play. Not to worry about spoilers if you haven't seen the movie; though the actual actors do lend their voices to the game as well.

Speaking of, there are primarily two alternating forms of play in Astro Boy: The Video Game, both of which are 2D- ground based and flying. The ground portions are button mashing beat em ups where Astro punches, kicks and laser blasts hordes of evil robots and performs various jumping/ platforming. And when I say 2D I mean even less depth of field than the original Double Dragon for the NES. There is no up and down (foreground and background) motion whatsoever.. Left & right only. The formula operates on the tried and true method of the screen halting until you've destroyed every enemy in a section then releases so that you can make your way to the next confined area to start robot booty kicking all over again.
