Excellent advanced relationship astrology,
By Tim Burness (Brighton, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Astrology of Intimacy, Sexuality & Relationship: Insights to Wholeness (Paperback)
As the author states early on, this is a book written for "intermediate-to-advanced level astrologers", and a good working knowledge of full birth charts is essential to understanding the majority of this excellent book. On the other hand there is a great deal of wisdom and insight on relationships and sexuality that almost anyone could benefit from. The first few sections in particular are full of profound and accessible psychological wisdom, this being augmented by an increasing number of examples and case histories as the book progresses.Tyl draws on his obviously massively extensive practical experience as an astrological counsellor throughout this superb book. A whole range of happy and unhappy relationship case histories are explored. Every possible intimacy issue is covered, no stone is left unturned! How can we express our deepest feelings to one another without fear of criticism, rejection or abandonment? Tyl explores the ongoing disappointments and crises most of us experience, even in fundamentally healthy relationships, as expectations and dreams are shattered, or "bubbles are burst" as he puts it. To his great credit, Noel Tyl includes his own chart and some of his own relationship experiences here. How could an author with Sun conjunct Jupiter in Capricorn in 7th, and Mercury in Capricorn in 8th, do anything else but write authoritatively on the realities of relationships and intimacy!?

The Whole Relationship,

This review is from: Astrology of Intimacy, Sexuality & Relationship: Insights to Wholeness (Paperback)
Another sagacious volume from Tyl. His amiable writing style takes the reader where no "cookbook" could ever wend. He prepares the student to investigate the "needs" of the individual behind the chart while providing insight for the helpful guidance in understanding these needs. This book is not for the beginner or faint of heart. Be prepared to roll up your sleeves for some indepth work in the art of synastry.

Explicit book, but a little difficult to understand,

This review is from: Astrology of Intimacy, Sexuality & Relationship: Insights to Wholeness (Paperback)
I did enjoy this astrology text and it was explicit and informative. However, it is definitely not for the beginner, as I am, to fully comprehend; although one other review did 'warn' of this. The books title was so interesting I bought it anyway. This book teaches through actual charts and case studies and so the author uses many advanced terms that are definitely not for a novice. Some words I looked up in a regular dictionary to try to further understand and they weren't even in there! This is not a cookbook interpretation of aspects one finds in a chart that will lead to intimacy issues or committment issues, etc., but a teaching tool. For the advanced and professional astrologer, there is a wealth of information here. I'm sure it will come in handy further in my studies.

Very informative and helpful,

I had to read in-between the in-depth astrological analyses to get to the stuff I could understand: the author's evaluation of intimacy and relationships. The parts I could understand were excellent, but you need to be well-versed in astrology to understand the rest.

This review is from: Astrology of Intimacy, Sexuality & Relationship: Insights to Wholeness (Paperback)
As the author of some 30 volumes, Noel Tyl's book, subtitled "Insights to Wholeness", presents the pinnacle of his psychodynamic needs-based thought on relationship and intimacy. While it is written for advanced students of astrology, it is packed with case studies, explanations and practical application for problematic situations in relationship analysis. I literally could not put it down. It covers such topics as intimacy-needs, fear and disillusionment, getting past fears, sexuality (and its difficulties), and general astrological considerations regarding relationship difficulty. It treats topics of fear, abuse and sexual dysfunction very sensitively and non-judgmentally. While it is hoped the reader will have some familiarity with Tyl's psychodynamic system, it is such an insightful read that I would recommend it very highly to anyone interested in helping others to build successful, satisfying relationships. I know I will read it again and again.

Too much psychology, not enough astrology,
This review is from: Astrology of Intimacy, Sexuality & Relationship: Insights to Wholeness (Paperback)
I bought this book because Noel Tyl is a premiere astrologer known for his expertise. This was my first book of his that I read...and I kept falling asleep. That's not a good sign. While I appreciate the in-depth psychological approach, the writing style is too academic for my taste. It reads like a college textbook. It's very heavy on chart examples (of clients and some celebs) and psychological descriptions that go on and on without any mention of astrology for pages at a time. For example, instead of just diving into chart examples or astrological explanation of impotence, Noel feels the need to explain the effects of impotence on a man's psyche and how society views it and blah blah blah - without much mention of astrology. We get it. If I didn't know what impotence was, I would have no interest in reading this book. And he starts with basics which I feel he should skip past for an advanced text. I would think that most people who buy this book already know what Venus represents in a natal chart, so why go into detail here? If I'm studying for the SAT's, I don't want a lesson on the alphabet.
Not good for people who don't like dry writing presented as fact, fact, fact, fact...but good for those who want to learn from a true astrological expert. |
