3.0 out of 5 stars Ok Book
My friend recommended this book to me. I have been looking for some new insight so I thought I would give it a try. Unfortunately I felt like the classifications (nodes) were way off. The introduction made perfect sense to be but as I started to read my node I felt like I was reading about a different person. I'm letting some friends borrow the book to get their...

"The sign in which the North Node falls denotes the psychological shift that need to occur within the personality. The house containing the North Node shows the experiences that allow the person to access this new psychological awareness...The South Node position in a chart (located at the point exactly opposite of the North Node) depicts an aspect in our character that has been overemphasized in past lives, and thus tends to take over the personality in this lifetime and throw us off balance. When we are acting without awareness, we tend to 'act out' the South Node position in response to our environment because we have been accustomed to that approach working to our advantage. However, in this lifetime, our experiences show us that approaching a situation from the stance shown by the position of the Southern Node of our chart is no longer working..." -- Jan Spiller in Astrology For The Soul

In her book Astrology for the Soul, astrologer Jan Spiller shows you the key to discovering your hidden talents, deepest desires, and the ways to avoid negative influences that may distract you from achieving your true life purpose, as revealed by the North Node of the Moon in your natal astrological chart. Although Spiller mostly uses the term North Node, she takes into consideration that the North Node exists in polarity with the South Node--and how they both manifest in our attitude, personality, and drive.

To discover your North Node, you need to generate a chart. You can do this by going to Astro.com Once you enter the birth time, date, and place a chart will be generated. Chart Drawing, Ascendant is where generated charts are stored. To find your North Node (NN) look for the glyph (symbol) that looks like a horseshow with curlicues on the end. The South Node (NN) will be in the House directly opposite the North Node, although it won't be pictured. The symbol for the SN is an inversion of the NN glyph. You also can also find your NN placement by gettng software like Mapping Your Birthchart.

In Astrology For The Soul each of the 12 Nodal positions are examined in areas like:

*Attributes to develop
*What these people really want
*Talents/Profession
*Healing Affirmations
*Personality
*Needs
*Relationships
*Goals
*Healing theme songs

Here is a small sample of Attributes to Develop for each of the 12 Nodal positions as described in this book:

Aries - Independence, trusting one's impulses, and self-nurturance

Taurus - Honoring expressed needs of self and others, forgiveness, and gratitude.

Gemini - Tact, logic, and listening.

Cancer - Empathy, humility, and accepting others flaws without judgment.

Leo - Individuality, self-confidence, and enthusiasm.

Virgo - Moderation, creating routines, and taking risks in spite of fears.

Libra - Cooperation, seeing through another's eyes, creating win/win situations.

Scorpio - Self-discipline, choosing constructive change, and enjoying high-risk situations.

Sagittarius - Patience, speaking from Higher Consciousness, and intuitive listening.

Capricorn - Self-control, self-respect, and letting go of the past.

Aquarius - Objectivity, desire for friendship, and active participation in groups.

Pisces - Compassion, surrending anxiety to a Higher Power, and welcoming change.

I highly recommend this informative book for releasing negative life patterns, embracing your strengths, and living a more centered and self-directed life.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you let yourself read this with an open mind you could be, April 8, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Astrology for the Soul (Bantam Classics) (Paperback)
amazed, astonished, helped, intrigued. I just started studying astrology and recently joined AA. An odd combo I realize, but such is life. With a Gemini north node in my fourth house, I have read the relevant chapters and have been amazed, astonished, helped, intrigued and plenty more (let me get my thesaurus...). Read in conjunction with AA's Big Book, I have felt some real healing in my life. Both are eminently practical, easy to read, easily understandable and, best of all, helpful. As I said, I have just begun my studying of astrology (I have read Tarot for more than 15 years) and am full of wonder and awe at the riches it has revealed. Spiller's book has allowed me to look at some less than pleasant parts of my personality with something new to me: hope. I am eagerly looking forward to her next book on aspects--a subject which I am just about to start studying seriously. I picked up this book while looking at basic astrology titles, and I can recommend it without reservation to anyone with even a cursory interest in serious astrology. You won't be confused or overwhelmed by what can be an enormously complex subject. Read it with an open mind and it can be an invaluable tool. It has literally been a source of revelation to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best North Node Book Ever!, April 30, 1998
This review is from: Astrology for the Soul (Bantam Classics) (Paperback)
I was reading one of the other comments from an astrologer of over 20 years. I disagree with her. She didn't read the introduction chapters of the book which stated to relate the house ruler and read that chapter. Jan Spiller has written a phenominal peice of work. I felt like I was reading a story about my life. Everyone I have turned this book on to has enjoyed it immensely. We need more Angels like Jan in this world, to help sort out some of the "old and set in there ways" Astrologers that are out there. The Universe is constantly changing and so is Astrology, to be set in your ways about the interpretation of the "way it used to be" is not leaving room to learn new perspective, which this book so boldly gives you. This is one of my top ten favorite books. Her other book Spiritual Astrology is just as great, read that one too. Peace...

5.0 out of 5 stars Profoundly transformative, August 2, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Astrology for the Soul (Bantam Classics) (Paperback)
This book may be the only astrological book you'll need to counsel your mid-life crisis clients! Profoundly transformative, this book offers incredibly detailed explanations of the motivations, including past life and karmaic influences, for each of the 12 signs the North Node can fall in. It also offers a North Node sign determination page, so you know by just glancing at a table what your client's North Node sign is. If you only buy this book to read the 20 or more pages of information and guidance on your own sign, it's well worth the money for the guidance! You'd have to find a very rare astrologer who knows this info, and pay them 2 to 5 times as much for a one time reading. Get to know yourself: Buy this book!

I'm the farthest from understanding astrology. I know next to nothing about the planetary alignments, what an opposition or conjunction is, and I don't have a clue about what all of those little symbols represent.

HOWEVER, when you open this gift of a book, and look up your "North Node" based on your birth date, what you WILL discover is SO MUCH more than I can describe.

It covers in great depth all of the aspects of your life from learning lessons, to what your greatest life challenges are, what key areas you came into this life to learn, transform or overcome, and it gives you incredible accuracy that I personally found amazing!!!

Additionally, if you ever had difficulty understanding another person, the info in this book puts it all into clear, logical perspective in layman's terms. What blew my mind was how much I discovered, and how unbelievable and on target this information is!

Seriously, for $12.35 this book is worth soooo much more because of all of the in-depth info it gives that leads to uncanny understanding!

You do NOT have to be "into astrology" to glean incredible insights from this book. All of the work is done for you! I've read many different books about astrological influences, and not one has ever given me so much understanding as this one did.

Another great part of it is that BEFORE you go into business with a new business partner, or dive into a romantic relationship, this book can show you so much about the person. It is NOT about "predictions" at all! It's all about understanding!

I never made a "promise" on a review before, but I will now. I do promise you that if you really want to UNDERSTAND more about yourself or someone you know, I have yet to find a book that spells it all out with such ACCURACY and DETAIL as this book.

Definitely get it just for this alone, because you will get so much out of it! This is one book I know I will recommend to anyone who really wants to understand more of the issues and challenges a person goes through. First, read it for your own understanding of yourself. Then if there's someone you would like to understand more about, a real and true understanding is what this book will bring to you. That I do "promise."

Jan Spiller, THANK YOU for writing this book! It brought me so much! And it deserves at minimum 10 Stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Essence of Astrology, June 12, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Astrology for the Soul (Bantam Classics) (Paperback)
Many astrology books out there are merely indulgement in philosophy. Astrology for the Soul is a practical book, applicable to any reader's life with razor clear explanations that cut to the heart of the matter. Jan sacrifices technical jargon and too much compartmentalization to completely integrate the life lesson contained in each node. While she doesn't specifically identify the south node, each node is dealt with showing the true polarity and with details of the north and south aspects of nodal placement: the negative karmic patterns of the south node that must be transcended, and the positive qualities of the north node which must be consciously integrated. Jan includes down to earth, plain language descriptions of the qualities that must be moved out of subconsciousness into consciousness so that the reader is able to recognize that within which he most tries to conceal. She includes healing affirmations and specific practices which make sense and work. This book came into my life in an unexpected way and quickly has become the heart of my analysis and the entry point into any chart that I use. While individual house placements are not included, and aspects to nodes are not covered, the essential core meanings are included here for the reader to build from. A tribute to the essential meaning of Astrology, the purpose of which is to add to people's lives and give them information which they can use and not merely think about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too close for comfort, for some., July 22, 1999

This review is from: Astrology for the Soul (Bantam Classics) (Paperback)
I have studied and practised astrology for over 20 years, and continue to study and critically evaluate the current literature. Jan Spiller's book is a seminal work. It accurately establishs the life purpose for each nodal position with astonishing clarity and depth. Her tone is clear and uncompromising, yet gentle. I winced at some of it, but recognised where I and others have been, how far we have progressed, and what has yet to be overcome. And she encourages that overcoming. While she does not spare our sensibilities, this is genuinely useful information. The most crucial astrological text this decade - read it and wonder at her angelic genius.

I am very happy to be able to review this excellent book. I discovered it by intuition and have not regeretted buying it! I feel as if a piece of heaven has fallen to earth in the form of this book, it really is such a treasure. Jan says the North node makes the rest of your natal chart come alive, and it's so true. It's like reading about yourself; so many of her little gems of insight are things I have felt before about myself but hadn't yet properly crystallised. A wonderful guide to how to get the best from yourself and your life, I am very thankful to Jan Spiller for having written this inspiring, uplifting work. I wonder how to contact her....?

Ms. Spiller did a detailed, soulful job interpreting the twelve NORTH NODE symbols--more than any other astrologer I've come across to date.

The interpretation enabled me to better understand myself and others, especially those with whom I had experienced conflict.

If you can read and are interested in self-discovery, you may want to check out this gem, which is very reader friendly.

Thank you, Jan Spiller! I look forward to your next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A spiritual guide for a troubled world, October 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Astrology for the Soul (Bantam Classics) (Paperback)
This book looks at the Moon's Nodes and interprets them in relation to our spiritual journey. There is a bit of a focus on the negative traits we must overcome, but the author gently forces us to take an honest look at ourselves. Although I am primarily a horary and event oriented astrologer, this book is one of those rare spiritually oriented texts that has something meaty to offer. My favorite book on horary, by the way, is Horary Astrology Plain and Simple by Anthony Louis.
