The Astronomers is a six-part series that explores the lives and works of scientists around the globe who are revolutionizing our knowledge of the universe. The series, narrated by noted actor Richard Chamberlain, goes to the farthest reaches of the universe in search of black holes, quasars, dark matter, gravity waves, stars and evidence of planets outside our solar system. These celestial phenomena are explored through the perspectives of the men and women all over the world whose jobs render them responsible for uncovering the secrets of the cosmos. Further, The Astronomers takes a uniquely humanizing approach to science programming, focusing not only on the professional achievements of the scientists, but on their personal lives as well. Searching For Black Holes. Quasars are the cores of distant and extremely powerful galaxies, hundreds of times more luminous than ordinary ones. Many scientists believe that a super-massive black hole is the only thing that can generate such incredible energy in such a small space. Searching For Black Holes documents the efforts of an international team of astronomers to link together six radio telescopes in Europe and America--basically creating a telescope half the size of the earth--in an attempt to look deep into the heart of one of these extraordinary galaxies. John Conway, of the California Institute of Technology, leads the experiment under the guidance of Caltech's Tony Readhead, maintaining constant contact with colleagues Richard Porcas in Germany and Tiziana Venturi in Italy, as they tackle numerous weather and equipment problems.
