I bought 8 of these for myself and gifts and tested them all. A couple came with alkaline batteries, but most with carbon. All work very, very well, but only with alkaline. If you get one of these with the carbon batteries simply replace the batteries with alkaline and the brightness about doubles. Be sure to load both of your batteries +tip first into the half of the laser with the pocket clip. Brightness did vary from one laser to another by a small amount and so did the concentration of the spot vary a little, but they are all nice lasers - can't beat the price. Construction is very good with heavy metal which gives it a substantial feel. The threads which attach the two halves are not lubricated and tend to gall, grate and squeek. All you need is a little quality grease on the threads and this solves that problem completely. I happened to have some Dupont Krytox grease and this makes it screw together Sooo smooth. Most of the lasers take about 1 second to come up to full brightness and one is full brightness from the moment the button is pushed. All in all I am very pleased with these and will likely buy more as gifts - they work great as a astronomy pointer for pointing out celestial objects in the sky at night and as a replacement to finderscopes like in my Meade ETX-125AT which came with an OK 8x25 right angle finder -- simply remove the finder, put this pen into the holder and tighten the screws to fix and then align the laser with your main telescope -- it really is much better than a small finder scope! I haven't tried lithium batteries yet, but as they have a much lower internal resistance than alkaline, I expect the laser to be even brighter with lithiums and lithiums last about 10 times longer than alkaline. These lasers are really quite amazing, but you need the get fresh alkaline batteries for them to really shine :-)

The laser is incredibly powerful for 20mw. Even with the included carbon batteries it outshines the other ones I have. At night you can clearly see the beam of green light. Very useful for pointing at stars and teaching astronomy. I highly recommend it!

Received in two days just as described. Unit is well made with all metal construction. Unreal power for 20mw. At night you can see a bright beam of light for a long distance. You can't beat this one for the price. I plan to buy more....great Christmas gifts.
