Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5 Up This history of astronomy and astronomers focuses more on the scientists who study the planets, the stars, and the forces that hold the universe together than on astronomical principles. In a personal style, Fradin introduces the many scientists who have made important discoveries and the historical, political, and religious context within which they lived and worked. The color photographs and drawings are of excellent quality, but there is no glossary and the index is not exhaustive. Useful summary charts about planets, stars, meteorites, comets, and constellations provide information at a glance, but the four pages on obtaining permission to use the telescope at Palomar (including an application form) seem superfluous. The National Geographic Picture Atlas of Our Universe (National Geographic, 1980) by Roy A. Gallant covers similar information, but Fradin's book adds information about current research, theories, and trends. Frances E. Millhouser, Arlington County Department of Libraries, Va.
