Vocal Aloe Vera, January 6, 2012
I recall that as a kid in grade school a teacher said that the most beautiful instrument is the human voice. At the time, I did not get the connection to the Temptations (still one of my favorite 60s groups), but a few years later I experienced the voice of Astrud Gilberto and realized what the teacher was stating. Of course, this is not opera. But then, and most fortunately, there's room for others in this big world. Otherwise, I never would have enjoyed Matt Monro, Dean Martin or Carmen McRae. Astrud Gilberto has a voice that is delicate, pretty and soothing. It does not soar to the heights but within the limits of the vocal range is a core of beauty.
On this release, Astrud teams with a group of excellent musicians, including Bud Shank on flute. The arrangements are by Marty Paich, one of the most talented of his generation. There's an expression about "preaching to the choir." So, if you don't want to be a member of this choir, there's always Tom Waits or Bob Dylan singing holiday favorites. I say this because these voices are the antithesis of her voice. If you want to bask in the beauty of the human voice, one with the inherent innocense of a child with no sense of guile, you might consider this. Certainly, there's plenty of room for Linda Ronstadt belting a rock tune. But, the music on this CD is intended to stir a calm appreciation of beauty and emotion, like an impressionist work of art with a nice rhythm track. I highly recommend this CD. For those who are interested, there's a youtube video ca 1965 of Astrud Gilberto singing one of the songs from this LP, Agua De Beber, and it is exquisite in its presentation and simplicity.
