2.0 out of 5 stars For Linux Power-Users Only, November 17, 2009

I bought this PC a while ago, and have slowly grown a cultivated hatred for it. It is portable and cute and lightweight and pretty sturdy, but do NOT buy a linux-filled version, even though it is cheaper than a Windows option.

I am not a computer programmer, but I really know how to troubleshoot on both PC's and Mac's, problems that stop other people and make them give it to their techy geek friend usually just take a few minutes for me to figure out. I figured that learning how to use another GUI operating system like this port of Linux would be fine.

I was horribly wrong.

This version of linux is extremely limited. First, it's ugly, with no ability to change the background images, a shallow but pleasing and necessary feature, IMHO. Also, you can only use the programs it comes pre-installed with, basically, limited Open Office software, firefox, a PDF reader, and a few extremely useless games and media apps. The music organizer stopped working for me one day, I can not easily update flash so I can't do lots of fun online things, and a whole load of other things are limited because I find it very difficult to install software.

You don't just choose where to put it and click on boxes to install things. You have to learn about an entirely different style of installation, which is incredibly complex for the unitiated. You have to type exacting commands in order to install anything, and the resulting error messages when you screw up are just confusing, not illuminating.

I can barely do anything on it because I do not find it fun to spend hours learning a skill I do not have (what basically feels like coding) and to post perplexing errors and inexplicable problems onto message boards and wait who knows how long for a response.

Don't think this operating system is easy-to-use. It is only for people with previous experience with Linux on the command prompt level! Not for casual Windows/Mac users or people who dislike learning new languages and constructs in order to install basic software!

2.0 out of 5 stars Affordable But Insufficient, December 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I bought my netbook in 2009 and it has held strong for 2 long years. I am a college student so the size and weight is what initially drew me in immediately. It arrived on time and in PERFECT condition, everything worked properly until the internet connection. The connection was all throughout the house even the front porch, but when I tried to connect I couldn't. I even called Comcast because I was sure that the problem was with them but sadly it was my netbook :( I literally had to sit in one place on the couch in order to get a connection and when I was at school OMG!!!!!!!! Yes it would pick up but whenever someone with a laptop or notebook or ANYTHING bigger set close and connected I would get knocked off :'( My netbook just recently stopped charging about a month ago and I'm not sure why, but it was a little trooper. If I knew then what I do know I wouldn't have ordered it, but I did get a crap loud of compliments on how cute it was. So to sum it all up: Poor internet connection, limited setting, can ONLY download Linux settings only and you cant really personalize it and make it your own. BTW, you will have to have 20/20 vision and small petite light fingers in order to operate. Hope this was helpful :D

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this junk from Target through Amazon., December 27, 2008
This review is from: Eeepc 8G White - Linux (Tools & Home Improvement)
If you think buying from Target through Amazon and getting Target service, think again. This Eee PC was purchased as a Christmas gift for me. The battery pack would not charge so I took it to my friendly local Target store for a replacement. I was told that even though someone had purchased it from Target they could not replace it for me because it was purchased through Amazon. It would have to be shipped back to Amazon for replacement. Well how about them apples?

Me standing there with a receipt that said Amazon/Target on it. A big brown box covered with Target tape because it was shipped from another Target store. And approximately $300.00 worth of dead merchandise and they could not swap it for the one just like it sitting on the counter.

Now in these "hard times" for retailers wouldn't you think a little bit of good old fashioned service would go a long way toward boosting customer confidence in their Target brand and create some goodwill and customer loyalty. The customers in line behind me thought I was not being unreasonable. I bet I would have never gotten that kind of run-around at the other big box stores. At least I haven't yet.

Hmm, maybe that's why I haven't ever shopped at Target stores before. And it's probably why I never will again.

Sincerely, Mark W. Repass - Greeneville, TN
