5.0 out of 5 stars Great notebook
This notebook is awesome. I work with CAD/CAM and I was looking for a notebook that could handle these softwares. This one here is perfect for me. The screen is very large and the image quality is very good. The video card is great, runs Solidworks, AutoCAD and Catia. I also tryed a few games like Farcry 2 and Medal of Honor Airborne and it ran perfectly. The only problem...

Although my computer might not be the same model as the computer up here for review, I am placing this review for all of those considering an ASUS computer as our experience will be the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great notebook, June 1, 2009
This review is from: ASUS N70Sv-A1 17.3-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)
This notebook is awesome. I work with CAD/CAM and I was looking for a notebook that could handle these softwares. This one here is perfect for me. The screen is very large and the image quality is very good. The video card is great, runs Solidworks, AutoCAD and Catia. I also tryed a few games like Farcry 2 and Medal of Honor Airborne and it ran perfectly. The only problem I found is that it does not come with a copy of Windows Vista alone. It comes with a CD that has Windows Vista installed along with a lot of undesired softwares, like HP notebooks.
Besides that, it's a great notebook. I strongly recommend it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor hardware, but worse customer service, August 9, 2010
This review is from: ASUS N70Sv-A1 17.3-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)
Although my computer might not be the same model as the computer up here for review, I am placing this review for all of those considering an ASUS computer as our experience will be the same.

I am a computer enthusiast and know my way around Windows, Unix, and Macintosh. I am a technical consultant for my University, as well as an engineering student, and know my computer stuff. I cannot recommend this product, or any ASUS computer for that matter, based on my technological and personal experience with the faulty hardware as well as with the ridiculously tedious and inefficient customer service.

My computer, the ASUS N70SV, arrived Dead on Arrival when I first received it, sent it in with an RMA, and after a replacement it worked fairly well for about 4 months until the screen displayed vertical red lines. I sent it in for RMA repair and got the screen replaced only to get my computer back with the physical bottom corner of the computer completely bent back a good inch. I sent it back for RMA repair again this time to replace the plastic frame that the technician damaged when he presumptively dropped my machine and it came back to me working. Two weeks later the LCD began displaying dead pixels and so I sent it in again and began to ask for a different model computer, to avoid having to send it in for bad components and service, and was promptly denied. Two weeks after I received my computer from the RMA repair, the second brand new LCD screen again displayed more dead pixels. I sent it in, again asking for a new model replacement computer. I was told that I might be able to get a replacement with something that the department manager (Janice was her name) told me was called an "application for recall" and so I sent in everything that I originally got with my computer expecting a new model for my lemon.

This is where things got even worse: In the middle of my fifth RMA with these guys ASUS customer service changed departments, did not honor the previous claim by the top manager at the previous department for an "application for recall", and again repaired my computer by replacing the faulty screen for the third time. I received my computer back from this RMA about a month ago with the computer working but the power adapter (previously working!) now broken with no ability to carry a charge (I used a multimeter to test it). After buying a temporary replacement adapter so that I could use my computer, the screen began to white-screen on me after about an hour of use (I was installing Windows 7). I diagnosed the problem as graphics card failure and now, just today, sent in my computer for RMA #7 and am about to send in the adapter for RMA #6.

Each time that I send my computer in for repair I do not see it for an average of 3 weeks. I have had 6 RMA's in the last 6 months which mean that on average I have a computer that I can use for about one week for every month. I can neither recommend a computer that fails like this, nor can I recommend a company that does not listen to its customers. My requests for a different model computer were never heard and had ASUS listened to my requests, they would have lost less money than it would have taken to repair and ship my computer, as well as the money to pay employees to talk to me over the phone (I have been on the phone long enough to know almost all the representatives by name and memorize the hold music. On a comical note, they used to play music from Disney's The Little Mermaid on the managers hold line before the departmental switch). They would have also avoided losing a customer (me) and other customers who come to me on a daily basis for computer recommendations. Please stay away from this brand of computer and save yourself lots of time and money. This brand has cheated me of my time and money. For the year that I have owned it, I have only been able to use it for about 6 months. I have no idea how they win all of the awards that they claim to have won for customer satisfaction.

I am currently in the process of writing a letter to some department heads at ASUS headquarters. I hope that they will pay a little more attention to me now. Please stay away.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: ASUS N70Sv-A1 17.3-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)
this computer is fast and very solid, in the way it is constructed. it comes with vista 64 bit, so make sure all the drivers that you need have 64 bit versions.

God is Gracious,

Andrew
