4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Way To Prepare For The ASVAB.
It is nice to have a book that not only gives you an advantage on the written test, but gives you one on the computerized test also. Not all MEPS give the test in written form anymore and it is nice to be able to practice on the test in computer form so it is not a surprise to you when you get there. The CD Rom was simple to install and easy to use. The only negative...

1.0 out of 5 stars AWFUL!...
This book is WORTHLESS! Not only is it written in a nauseatingly bad style but the book doesn't tell you anything you can't find by doing a little Internet research. That's what I was looking for and this book failed to provide it. Save your money and search the web instead.

The CD Rom was simple to install and easy to use. The only negative response about this book/CD that I can think of is that on the CD Rom, it repeats the same questions over and over again, just in a different order. A greater diversity in questions would be much more beneficial when striving for that high composite ASVAB score. After all, the higher the composite score, the better chance of getting what you want out of the military.

3.0 out of 5 stars Book=Decent, CD=Crap, August 5, 2009

The book is helpful, because it gives you a way to convert your raw scores (the number of questions you got right in each category) to a scaled score(which is the numbers the branches use to determine your score in each composite field). For instance, I'm joining the Army. With the chart I was able to take the test, convert my raw scores to scaled scores, and then determine what score I got in each area (such as Skilled Technical (ST), Combat (CO), General Technical (GT). You need a conversion chart like this one in order to figure out if you're scoring high enough in a particular section to qualify for the MOS you want. The other branches call their sections different things, but it has charts for all branches.

It did help me to take some more tests, but the tests themselves are nothing different than most of the practice tests available on the Web. In fact, after taking many practice tests on the Web I found the ones in this book to be easier than most. I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

You do get a chapter on each separate sub-test (Beneral Science, Math Knowledge, etc), but the advice is minimal. Again, this can be found on the Web, but if you have a teenager studying for the ASVAB and you want them to have everything right in front of them, in print, then it's probably worth the $20.

Here's the biggest problem I had; the answer keys in the book have a few errors, listing incorrect answers. Fortunately each answer has an explanation, so you can look at that and say, "Oh, I picked the right answer after all; the key is just wrong." While the book only has a few of these, the CD-ROM has a TON of them!!! I just completed a 30-question test for the Arithmetic Reasoning subtest, and found that 6 out of their 30 answers were wrong. The explanation accompanying each correction was what showed me that I had indeed chosen the answer they wanted me to, but they had the letters of the answer wrong.

Let's say the answer to the question is 18.5. While taking the test, I would choose C, which was 18.5. When going over my results, it would tell me I should have chosen A, 18.5, even though A was something else entirely. Make sense?

Also, the CD-ROM doesn't have a wide variety of questions on it, only enough to take each subtest twice.

So, it's okay if you want some study material all in one spot in text form, and the conversion charts were really handy for helping me to know whether I'll qualify for most of the MOS I want, but the practice tests themselves are questionable, and the CD-ROM is complete garbage.

I bought and used mine this evening, and will be returning it tomorrow.
