Book Description

Tucked away in Sofie’s wintery asylum with no hope of release for years, Evangeline must come to terms with her situation: the curse still plagues her, she’s now hunted by a two thousand-year-old vampire, and the guy she’s in love with tried to kill her. Plus, she’s locked up with a cranky Max and the Forero kids—two people everyone seems to prefer dead over alive. Things aren’t looking good.

Meanwhile, back in Manhattan, Sofie struggles to keep forty trapped and bloodthirsty Ratheus vampires at bay and a desperate Viggo from killing Evangeline’s friends, all while hints stir outside the walls of the NYC vampire asylum of a war brewing between the Sentinel and the witches.

Is there any hope for Evangeline and Caden? Can Sofie control the rival powers? Is the fate of Earth predestined?

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! January 15, 2012

(Note: I tried not to share any spoilers. I do reference the first book Anathema. I would hate to ruin this book for you. It is a very good story to read.)

This is the second book in KA Tucker's Casual Enhancement series. And all I can say to is hold on tight because this takes you for one heck of ride.
This story picks up right where Anathema stops. Evangeline is learning to deal with her new surroundings. She was exiled to an unknown location by Sophie when she returned from Ratheus (with company). Her only companions are Leo, Max, Julian and a few others. She is forced to relive the last moments with Caden over and over or die from boredom. Half way around the world, Sophie is now alone in New York, left to deal with the Ratheus vampires, and the duo of Viggo & Mortimer. Sophie's actions at the end of Anathema reveal she loves Evangeline, like a daughter, and will go to the ends of the earth to protect her. As expected, V&M are not happy Sophie has been lying to them and that Evangeline is gone. They have waited too long to for their love, Veronique. Now, Sophie must deal with the Ratheus vampires, V&M and discover how to free Evangeline from the curse.

We continue to learn more about the characters especially Evangeline, Caden, and Sophie. I will say I liked how these characters grew with the story. We do meet several new characters including Mage and Julian. I like these new characters, especially Mage. Her character really adds to this story and I can't wait to see how she impacts the next book. KA Tucker has a phenomenal way of giving human emotion to her characters, I felt connected to them as I read this story.

Once again, I was blown away with how 2 separate stories are weaved together to give you this mind blowing ending. The ending to this book literally had me at the edge of my seat. I was not disappointed to where the story ended. My only disappointment is I have to wait until next year to find out what happens.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love the Colorful Cover! January 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have mixed feelings about Asylum. It was quite a bit shorter than Anathema which I thought was good, but it did not have ANY romance which I thought was bad. The love story is what I loved so much about the first one and this one was just drama and character development, which is common for a second book, if not a little boring.

Evangeline spends 90% of the story bored in the cabin with Julian, Leo and Max. She had one dream that placed her in the same room as Caden, and I was hoping this was going to continue, but it didn't. Julian and Evangeline become good friends but no triangle is set in place, and honestly, nothing really happens in their story line.

Sophie has her hands full back at Viggo and Mortimer's house with the hungry vampires and the People's Sentinels determined to kill all witches and Vampires. Viggo and Mortimer conspire against her when she won't sacrifice Evangeline's life for Veronique's or tell them where she hid Evangeline. Mage, the leader of the vampires on Ratheus, plays a major role in the story and isn't who she appears to be. There is a lot of magical warfare and loved characters do die, so be prepared for tragedy (and no romance)!

K. A. Tucker created another imaginative story that was well paced and full of action. I personally would have liked it better if Evangeline could have at least continued to visit Caden in her dreams and continued on the star crossed love story. That would have made this a five star book for me.

Would I/Did I buy it? Yes (2.99)
Would I read it again? No
Would I recommend it to friends? Yes

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything I enjoy in a book and more!! January 30, 2012
Format:Paperback
Tucker has done it again! Asylum is one of those books I didn't want to put down because of everything that was happening within the story. This book is filled with claw biting excitement, heart-break, and mystery. If you haven't read the first book of this series, then I suggest you do so as soon as possible because Asylum picks up right after the events in Anathema.

Unlike Anathema which is told entirely from Evangeline's point of view, Asylum is told both by Evangeline and Sofie. Rather than focus entirely on the events taking place in Evangeline's life, Tucker flawlessly blends both points of views and allows her readers the opportunity to follow Sofie around as she tries to deal with things back in New York. Having Sofie's point of view allowed me to not only get to know her better as a character, but also opened up new insights into events that occurred in the first book. Questions that were not answered in Anathema were answered here thanks to Tucker giving us Sofie's point of view. Course, new questions arise from this as well, but that was to be expected.

As if the alternating points of view were not enough to make this story great, Tucker's characters continue to shine throughout the pages. I found a new favorite in Mage, a vampire who is much more than she seems. Readers only got a brief glimpse of her in book one, but in Asylum she is in the spotlight! She's strong, cunning, mysterious, and so much more. I really hope she's a part of the third book. Murr! I also greatly enjoyed seeing more of Leo in this book. He is another character who grew on me as the story unfolded. Actually, it seemed to me as if Tucker decided to develop her secondary characters more, allowing them their moment to shine and gain attention.
