Book Description

Across the country, hidden in plain sight, are the forgotten remains of a once-great psychiatric movement: the asylum. These crumbling castles all share a common appearance and history. They inspire curiosity, fear, and even a few urban legends.

Chloe Adams came to Birch Harbor, a small college town in the U.P., to escape the stigma of mental illness. Her new roommate Sam Klingeman, came to drink her weight in vodka and find a hot guy with a trust fund. Between Chloe's developing relationship with campus hockey hero and floor RA, Seth Maird, trying to be the voice of moderation for Sam, and her new position as teacher's assistant for the eccentric Dr. Willard, she's stayed busy enough to keep the past firmly behind her.

But the voices return...and this time, she's not the only one that can hear them.

The beautiful old dormitory she lives in is hiding a secret. A secret that will uncover a dark plot 200 years in the making. Will Chloe be able to hold onto the new life she's worked so hard to build, will she relapse into a world of her own making, or will she, perhaps, fulfill the legacy she was born into?

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read! November 3, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Colorful characters and a plot that wastes no time getting started, this story is rich in the telling and has something for everyone: intrigue, mystery, hauntings and secrets, seasoned with a little romance on the side. The fact that it is set in beautiful northern Michigan is an added plus! The writing is so descriptive I was drawn into the story as if the characters were really there before me. Asylum drew me in and held me to the very last page!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Definite Page Turner January 18, 2012
By Susan
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy Asylum or not, but after the first chapter I was hooked. I didn't want to put the book down! I had to force myself to put it down a couple times, but finally had an entire day to do nothing but read. I was concerned about Chloe, and definitely wanted her and Seth to hook up. Sam had me very concerned with her drinking. I wasn't too sure about Prof. Willard, but ended up liking him. I hope to be able to find the second book of the series! I am eagerly anticipating what will happen next to Chloe, Sam, and Seth.

The only off-putting part were the series of typos that I discovered -- and a few missing words that I almost didn't notice. And, at the end, the misspelling of the word "altar". "Altar" is not the same as "alter". Proofreading could have been better, so I give the book 4 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good paranormal read January 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This review does contain some spoilers--
I really enjoyed the book and I was all ready to give it 5 stars at the start but at the end I just could not do it. There were some parts like other readers mentioned that had some holes and this book really needs to be proofread but my issues overall were a bit different.
I loved, loved this book until the end of it where Chloe is possessed by George, I really felt that part was drawn out and I was about ready to skip ahead to where she woke up! I did not overly care for the reason the haunting was taking place, Abraham's men!? I really felt a bit disappointed at this part the whole bad men thing just was not what I was hoping for and I felt as if it could have been much better with another twist or plot there.
Chloe finally getting a night with Seth, them alone in his bed and after the night they all had she has to get up and go read the book her dad gave her? It could not wait until the morning? The whole relationship is a mess with her questioning everything and asking him while he is with her at every turn, they finally are happy and alone I wish she had stayed.

The whole book tho was a page turner and was well written I really enjoyed it and I will read the next one as soon as it comes out. If you like paranormal books then this is a book that you should pick up and read.

I think all of us can find a little bit of Chloe, Sam, and Seth in ourselves. It is worth the time to read. It wont take long cause you wont want to put it down.i am already looking forward to the next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Any Fan of the Mystery Genre! November 3, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This suspenseful work of young adult fiction held my attention from page one. While the protagonist is very down to earth, the plot is anything but. Set in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula, this tale will make you question everything from modern psychology to the paranormal. This is a must read for any fan of the mystery genre!

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read... December 31, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The plot was really good and I liked the characters. I live in the UP so it was nice to read about things I am familiar with. The only reason it is a 4 insteadof 5 star review is that it felt a little rushed sometimes. On one page Chloe is afraid people will know about her past, and then on the next page she tells her new roommate the day after she meets her. I wasn't clear ona few points of the plot, but maybe I wasn't supposed to be as I hear there's a part 2 coming. I would definitely recommend this book, and will look for part 2 as well as other books by this author!

Just got my Kindle Fire for Christmas and this was one of the free books I downloaded. I wasn't sure what to expect from the author. What can I say? I LOVED it and can't wait for book 2. This is one book that is hard to put down after it is started.

Odd yet engaging story with well developed characters. Seemed a little predictable at first, but had some well placed twists and turns.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.
I'm from Michigan, so it was cool to read a book based in the U.P. and getting all the jokes. Kind of got away from me towards the end, but the rest of the book was really good.

More About the Author

Kristen Selleck is avidly evil. Until recently, she worked as a mad scientist. After several diabolical attempts at world domination proved unsuccessful (most notably, building an army of robots from used pipettes, empty reagent boxes, and other things left lying around the lab), she decided to pick up the pen. She used the pen to poke an annoying lady at the gas station in the eyeball. Then she decided to write. She has been known to speak with a strong Russian accent. This is inexplicable due to the fact that she was born in Detroit. It has also been documented that she likes vodka, roller coasters, things which are purple, and blowing things up with dry ice. She abhors kittens, wood paneling popularized in the 1970's, and her arch-nemesis Jimmy (the Evil Overlord of Specimen Processing). She was last known to reside in Grand Rapids, and may be in the company of two evil apprentices, and her devoted henchman, Shad. If seen, please contact the FBI immediately (she owes someone in Accounting a sandwich).
