An overlooked ska/pub rock UK band, December 21, 2004
This review is from: At the 1980 Chelsea Night Club: The Choice Is Yours (Audio CD)
My guess is modern (last 25 years) UK music fans mainly know about this band. Probably cuz their radio playlists are far more broad than ours in the States. Our loss. These guys sounded great in 1979/80 when they came out and I only knew one guy who was into them (Steve of Noise for Heros zine, a UK musical expert). Thanks Steve. 'Chelsea Nightclub', 'Offshore Banking Business' and 'Solitary Confinement' are all songs that could have made the radio in the U.S. but, as usual, not enough courage. Very friendly stuff. 'Offshore Banking Business' is even beyond the Two-Tone UK ska, it's almost a white reggae song that works. Not a rip off, a tribute and reworked very nicely into their pub rock (I think that's what it is) sound, cousins of ELVIS COSTELLO and NICK LOWE but way better than NICK LOWE whom I never cared for. Actually, their U.S. counterpart might be considered to be the OFFS from San Francisco, another rarely considered band that shoulda made it. Maybe having releases in existance and nice CD reissues such as this are enough.
Who knows what the boys are up to know. Landscaping? Producing? Truck drivers? Heck, in the VH1 New Wave bands back together show a guy from the ENGLISH BEAT was teaching people how to rollerskate. I guess if it pays the bills. What I do know is this album is very fun and is a beautiful blend by top rate musicians and a nice vocalist of Jamacian influence through a UK pub band. And I wouldn't call it New Wave. Maybe a cousin to punk. chrisbct@hotmail.com
