Now *this* is what *I* call *Music*!!,
By Sandy (Brussels, Belgium) - See all my reviews
This review is from: At the Close of Every Day (Audio CD)
I can only try to share my enthousiasm on this one.It is difficult to explain what I felt listening to the record for the first time. I bought it without really knowing the band or any songs, on an impulsion. I did not regret it a second, I was overwhelmed. The singer has an awesome voice and know how to use it. They have a great sense of melody, lifted up by proeminent guitars. I cannot imagine to skip a single track. This is melodious solid rock. And unlike many products released these days you can read the lyrics without asking yourself if they were written by a 10 years old kid. They can be compared to lot of bands, but they remain themselves, Arid. I consider it as my best purchase this year! "At the close of everyday" and "Too late Tonight" shake you all up, then they calm things down with a mysterious ballad "All will wait". "Little things of venom" alterns a deep pulse and a melodious chorus you will sing along, "Believer" will catch you straight away, try to avoid foot taping on this one - right pick for a single. "Dearly departed" is a pendant to "Little things of Venom", "Me and my melody" has a Radiohead feeling (when they were releasing "High and dry" or "Street Spirit") and "World Weary eyes" puts tempo up again. "Life" is an amazing track with incredible rhythm variations, acelerations and decelerations. "Elegy" is a delicate ballad where the singer can show his vocal abilities again. I am thinking about Kurt Cobain sometimes. "Soiree" ends up the album on an up-tempo song "grunge" bands would have not looked down at. I can't even pick a favourite. If you like rock bands who do not want to use their guitars and drums just to make noise, but to create real pieces of music, there is must buy written all over it. If you can find the special edition with bonus 5 live tracks cd, check it out.

Live, he says it himself,

In Belgium we call this album "Little things of venom" wich is a much more beautiful title and also the best song of the CD. Now to business: This one is good. Very good. I would even call it fantastic. It's the voice, I know. Talking about talent.... The cd is full of moving, touching songs, some soft, some rocking, but the atmosphere remains the same. Somewhat melancholic. Very beautiful. Live they are invincible, really. Even more in little clubs than on big stages. At the moment of speaking (december 2003) there appeared a live-cd. I would say: grab your chance!

Not Bad,

This album wasn't bad. The best song is Little Things of Venom..I first heard the song while in Las Vegas. The lead singer appears as the lead character in an IMAX film called Haunted House which is shown at the Luxor Hotel & Casino. The band appears together at the end singing the Venom song which is played throughout.

I recently saw Arid in an IMAX movie, "Haunted Castle". I could not believe how fantastic the music was. I immediately purchased their CD and I could not be happier. Every track is fantastic and refreshing. This band is on the verge of something great.

What can I say, They supported the counting crows in glasgow @ the start of 2000. I was far more impressed by them than the crows, Upstaged was not the word, ive spent since then trying to find the album in scotland to no avale. Thus why im here, arid are by far the most promising band ive heard in a while, Personnal I think comparing them to jeff buckley is not fitting and draws a poor conclusion to those who like myself are not a big jeff buckley fan. What can I say but stress beyond any shadow of a doubt BUY THIS ALBUM. invest in arid. For those who are still not convinced cause im only hear buying the cd, consider this Its on the strenght of a half hour set...

Little things of Venom,
By "ionteclo" (Paris France) - See all my reviews

The title of the album is not At the close of everyday but Little things of Venom, this said, i can tell you my feeling about this album. This album is strikingly beautiful and emotional, in my heart it actually ranks along with Jeff Buckley's Grace. Thanks to David's guitar melodies and Jasper's incredible voice, the Arid compositions are pure and intense at the same time. Jasper's voice is really close to Freddy Mercury as to it's texture, and close to Jeff Buckley as to the way he sings. The production of this album is sober yet beautiful and inventive (aka "life", in this song the chorus has two different rythm, it just makes your heart pump faster!!). The music is pure because no sampler has been used, it is just pure rock, with occasional strings, nothing more, nothing less, the songs are just enough that way. Arid is the kind of band which doesn't need any samplers and loops to make their music interesting. I can even catch myself holding my breath on Elegy, in order to hear everything perfectly. The lyrics are also a great part of Arid's music, they fit perfectly with the music, and are really meaningful and emotional. For all these reasons, i can only advise you to buy the album and help a young and promising band! Charlotte

Sheer Brilliance!,

I own the Belgian version of this CD as I couldn't wait to purchase it having heard the band at a Counting Crows concert. Jasper's voice is enchanting, echoing the brilliance of Jeff Buckley. Too Late Tonight, Little Things of Venom (The title track on the belgian version, Believer,Dearly departed and Me and My Melody are all stand out tracks, whilst the remaining few are all of a pretty high standard. This album does not have a weak link. BUY IT AND LET THE MAGIC OF ARID ENTER YOUR LIFE!

Belgian Sensation,
By Peter Brees (Brussels, Belgium) - See all my reviews

I first saw Arid when they were opening for a Manic Street Preachers concert in Brussels almost two years ago. They just blew me away. I went out the next day to buy the album but it wasn't released yet and I had to wait another month before it came out. The lead singer's voice has been compared a lot to Jeff Buckley's and he takes it as a huge compliment. The music is a beautiful mix of soft, sensitive pieces and rough guitar riffs. Watch out for 'All will wait', 'Too Late Tonight' and my favorite 'Dearly Departed' wich starts of really soft and slow and builds to a great explosion of guitar and drum. The album is great, but wait untill you see them live!

Music That Calls My Heart Home,
By
This review is from: At the Close of Every Day (Audio CD)
The walls of my life close in every day, but then I hear his voice breaking through the other side. And his heart and soul reaches out to me, pulling me deep into sound, and instrumental waves slam into brick stones. And the heart of lyrics roars with soul, and I am his until the music comes to an end.
