This book got me thinking about changes to make to our Firm. Very easy to read as it is written as a narrative.
At The Crossroads confirmed several things for me: 1) The old way of "eat what you kill" is outmoded; 2) the Firm needs to be operated as a business no different than other for profit businesses; and 3) this can be done. I am going to have the opportunity to meet Gale Crosley at the msi International Meeting in October 2009 in Toronto and hope to learn more from her then.

This is a great book. The novelistic style made it very interesting and not another boring marketing or business development textbook. I highly recommend it for anyone working in public accounting who wants to grow their practice and take their firm to the next level.
The Practice Growth Model is a structured approach to new business development. CPA firm owners need to wake up and realize that it's a different market out there now. Clients are much more intelligent and sophisticated than before and you can't just hang out a shingle anymore if you expect to grow. The information contained in this novel will kick start your practice to new opportunties.

Ms Crosley and Ms Stover crafted a great way to describe many of the problems with today's CPA firms and what can be done to help. Having met thousands of CPAs in my career as a M&A advisor to accounting firms I could recognize every partner described in this book.
If you are frustrated with practice growth then is would be a good read for you. John R. Ezell, CPA ProHorizons Network, Inc [...]

As the managing partner of a small but growing Certified General Accounting public practice firm (15 staff) in New Westminster, BC, I wear many hats. Production Manager, Marketing Manager, Professional Development Manager, Privacy Officer, Quality Assurance Manager, and others too numerous to mention.
It is refreshing to find a book that describes a firm and its journey from being a "do good work and you will grow firm - focused on production only" to "a firm that uses strategic, directed, planned methods of growth, while you do good work". Having previously worked in firms that have had an "eat what you kill" approach to managing the practice, I can see many of the challenges that were described at the firm Crandall & Potter prior to the culture change. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a partner, or aspiring to become a partner in a professional service firm. Jason Trefanenko |
