Book Description

Green Integer June 1, 2003

"Elana Greenfield and the English language use each other beautifully. She makes little plays, stories long and short. The short ones, on another day, might have been poems. She is a lovely, lively writer."—Grace Paley

This new collection of dramatic short tales is a remarkable first work by dramatist Elana Greenfield. In these stories, the author peers into the supernatural with passion, humor, irony and a remarkable matter-of-fact voice. In "Possessed by a Demon," the devil reveals himself through two women who are both the narrators and the central characters. In "Talent," Greenfield tells the story of a woman trying to transcend the elusiveness of love. And in "The Premonitions," she lyrically predicts the life of Jesus. Together these pieces work toward self-discovery and awareness, while relinquishing the need to explain the inexplicable.

Elana Greenfield lives in New York City.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A corrosive, beautiful and delicate book...that defies description and expectation at every turn...a remarkable achievement." -- HotReviews.org, Fall '03

"Greenfield's vision forces the reader out of his complacency and into the realm of the unknown..." -- The Believer, September '04

"[A] marvelous trip, and an impressive and quite original debut." -- The Brooklyn Rail, May '04

"[G]enuinely original...Fury and tenderness, keening sorrow and some of the funniest things I've ever read..." -- Editor's Choice, Bomb Magazine, Spring '04

From the Publisher

"Combining fiction, poetry, drama and other genres, Elana Greenfield is a master of the kind of hybrid writing that energizes meaning and touches us as readers; her work is no mere postmodernist sampling, for here the many forms cohere into a revelant and emotionally profound entity."

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant writer, October 7, 2011

This review is from: At the Damascus Gate: Short Hallucinations (Green Integer) (Paperback)
As a writer who crosses genre and form, Elana Greenfield is sui generis. Her stories, which deal with love, war, dislocation, and clashes of culture, move through time and geography in an almost dream-like way. Greenfield has a way of making the ephemeral feel concrete, and the physical utterly elusive. When I read her work, I am transported by her extraordinary imagination, and by a deep sensitivity that can makes me cry or laugh out loud, sometimes at once.
