Mandatory for all Velvet Underground faithful, but not the place for a beginning VU fan to start.

Keyhole Records must not have plans for a future release of any kind since their reputation is thoroughly trashed with this garbage release.

It's just as good as 1969 live official release and better than the Quine Tapes sound quality wise.

Reviewer #1 is mostly right; the sound is a bit muffled, but this is a famous audience tape of a band at the peak of its powers. If you turn it up and close your eyes you are right there in the club. If you absolutely love The Velvet Underground, love "Live At Max's Kansas City," love "The Quine Tapes," love "Live 1969," then you will love this recording. If you don't care that much for audience tapes from the late 1960's, pass on it. For me, this is one of the most enjoyable bootleg tapes of Doug Yule-era VU. They are on fire at this show . . .

The Velvet Underground's six-night run of shows at the Dallas club the End Of Cole Avenue in the fall of 1969 marked the first time the band had played in Texas, and near the end of the engagement, a local recording engineer who was a fan brought a portable recording rig to make a personal tape of the band’s performances. He recorded the shows on October 18 and 19; the band discovered he was taping the shows and told him they didn’t mind, so the October 19 performance was miked close to the stage and the fidelity is very good, good enough that several songs from that night appear on the authorized album 1969 VELVET UNDERGROUND LIVE. The October 18 performance appears on this album, LIVE AT THE END OF COLE AVENUE – THE FIRST NIGHT (it was actually the fifth night, but who’s counting?) and the sound quality isn’t quite as good, with the vocals distant in the mix and the audio a bit echoey. But compared to the average audience recording of the era, these recordings sound very good indeed, and the band is in fine form – certainly playing as well as they did on 1969 LIVE, and sounding more energetic than they did on the final night of their run in Dallas (perhaps because they hadn’t yet watched the Dallas Cowboys decimate the New York Jets, which Lou Reed comments upon in the Oct. 19 tapes). This music has made the rounds for years on bootlegs, and if the fidelity is no better in this edition from Keyhole, it’s cheaper than most boot editions, and the cover replicates the poster artwork from the 1969 Dallas shows. An essential purchase for Velvets fans, though newbies should start elsewhere.

This is the second VU release from Keyhole Records, but it's actually a better performance and better-sounding tape than their La Cave 1968release. This actually wasn't the 1st night they played At The End Of Cole Ave, it's just the first night that was recorded. Some of the next night's performance (which was also recorded) ended up on Velvet Underground Live 1969 volume 1 and Live 2. The sound on those recordings are mastered slightly better than you find them here, however, they got to cherry pick: the vocals sometimes get a little distant on some of these songs. Sound quality is comparable to The Velvet Underground Bootleg Series Volume 1: The Quine Tapes. Mandatory for all Velvet Underground faithful, but not the place for a beginning VU fan to start. I am quite excited to see that " At the End of Cole Ave - Second Night is coming out in May 2013.
