Great Music!,

This review is from: At The End of The Day (Audio CD)
Being just a regular guy who happens to enjoy good music, I'm always excited to find new sources of pleasure as it pertains to my musical experiences. When I listened to "At The End of The Day", I found myself connected to the soothing piano melodies in a way that absolutely brightened my day. It was easy to feel the subject of each of the separate tracks as if they were written just for me. I found it emotionally satisfying to be able to drift off with each of the songs, enjoying both the style and depth of each tune.
Not only are the piano melodies each wonderful, but the accompanying musicians each add so much to the experience of it all. There is such a full, rich sound, it's hard to believe there isn't an entire symphony playing behind her. It has quickly become the CD I play when I need lifting and relaxing, as it has the capability of accomplishing both. What I find interesting is that my two youngest children, ages 17 and 15, hard-core rockers both, asked for their own copies after borrowing mine. It's not unusual to see them listening to their Ipods with a track of "At The End of The Day" ringing their ears. They have commented that they like the melodies and how it relaxes them. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys great music that is soothing and comforting. It will give you a lift as it has me.

Fantastic and Refreshing,

Oliver Wendell Holmes said it best: "Take a music bath once or twice a week, and you will find that it is to the soul what the water bath is to the body." My favorite CD's to listen, "At the End of the Day" and "The Lullaby Album" are fantastic; just what my soul needs to be refreshed. I highly recommended this creative and wonderful composer with amazing talents.

Carolyn's gorgeous music has captured a moment in my soul. I am moved to tears and warmth with a smiling heart. This CD calms, connects, awakens and restores my mind. As it plays it brings me to a state of gratitude, hope, forgiveness, peace and fondness...A flight to life's simple yet magnificent treaures. While listening I can see the crimson gold sunset with gliding eagles. I feel the sand nestling my feet as I tiptoe a delicate dance. I am soaring with the beauty of each song. This CD is truly a gift.

From One Island to Another,
This review is from: At The End of The Day (Audio CD)
I used to live on Camano Island five years ago. I live in Hawaii now and I love it here. But every time I listen to Carolyn's music, I am drawn back to the Pacific Northwest. I can see that Camano sunrise and see the eagles soaring. She captures all that with music. It makes me homesick and nostalgic but I love it. She has a way with music like no other and I love listening to her creations.

Not JUST for 'the end of the day".,
By A mom who knows (Arlington, Wa.) - See all my reviews

This album has been a staple in our family's music library since it was produced about 4 years ago and for good reason. The melodies and gentle rhythms are very relaxing. A variety of instruments are used which complement the beautiful piano melodies. There is no skipping tracks with this album. There is not a single track that I don't enjoy. Carolyn has titled this album "At The End Of The Day", and indeed it is perfect for relaxing to after a long or busy day, but we have this as one of our albums in the mix nearly everyday in our home. As a home-schooling family, we have music playing in our home most of the day while the children study and do projects. As a mom, I'm very picky about what kind of music is played in our home. This music helps to lay the foundation for a gentle peace in our home...and every one of us enjoys it. My children (now ages 9-19) and I have never tired of this album. This album has also transformed many a busy day in the car from a stressful and hectic time to a peaceful and contemplative time. It is also gentle enough that I often choose it as background for my yoga practice. If you are looking for an album to complement your Saturday afternoon drive through beautiful scenery (or to take you away to a beautiful place in your own mind), set the mood for a romantic evening with your sweetheart, or just to relax to "at the end of the day", then this is a perfect album for you.

"At the End of the Day" is Carolyn Southworth's debut CD, but it certainly doesn't sound like a first release! Produced by David Lanz's former collaborator, Grammy nominee Paul Speer, and accompanied on several tracks by woodwind artist, Nancy Rumbel (of Tingstad and Rumbel), "At the End of the Day" could easily be mistaken for a Narada release from that label's heyday. Speer's guitar is so distinctive that I might have guessed that a few of the tracks were early Lanz/Speer material. Anyone nostalgic for that sound will absolutely love this CD! However, this is not an impersonation or copycat music. It is a flawless collection of deeply personal compositions for piano and other instruments (keyboard, oboe, English horn, bass, percussion, sax, flute, and guitar - almost all acoustic). Strong melodies and passionate playing make this a standout album for concentrated listening or to accompany a long drive, a cozy fireplace, or just chillin'. Along with being an accomplished pianist/composer, Carolyn Southworth is a violin and piano teacher, plays violin and viola, directs choirs, performs, and composes for a wide range of musical ensembles.
The title track opens the CD with a beautiful piece about relaxing and unwinding after a long, hectic day. Easy-going and smooth with a feeling of contentment, it's a great way to start! "Sideways" tells about how life can go in that direction if we take ourselves too seriously and don't have fun. Upbeat and cheerful, the mood is playful and lighthearted. "Silver Lining" is a favorite. Flute, guitar, and percussion enhance the soulful piano with mystery and passion. "In My Fondest Dreams" is a love song from a musical Southworth wrote the music and lyrics for, called "Abinadi," arranged as a warm and dreamy instrumental. "Where Eagles Soar" is another favorite. Inspired by watching a family of bald eagles soaring and playing on wind currents, the music is powerful and graceful, yet effortless. Speer's guitar represents the cry of the birds. "Highlander" is a beautiful tribute to Southworth's Scottish heritage. Mostly piano and flute, the flowing melody suggests a hillside with a gentle breeze blowing through the grasses and wildflowers. "Anchor In the Storm" is especially Lanz-like with its loving warmth and optimism as well as Speer's accompanying guitar. "In the Wake of the Storm" is much darker, describing the destruction that washes up on the shoreline after a winter storm. Near the end of the song, the tone lightens as the sun comes out and the calm returns. Very effective! "Nocturne" brings us back to the end of the day with a gorgeous song of comfort and peacefulness - the flute and piano are so good together on this! I usually try to not compare artists and their work, but I really think fans of David Lanz's early music (and there are a LOT of them!) will love "At the End of the Day." Carolyn Southworth is a wonderful discovery, so check her music out! Recommended! |
