A Note from Joanna…
At the feet of Jesus.

I don’t know what those words do to your heart, but they stir something deep within me. My spirit longs for time with the Lord, but life often interferes. So many responsibilities to take care of. So many duties to be done.

Sitting at Jesus’s feet was a choice Mary had to make the day He came to her family’s home in Bethany (Luke 10:38–42). It is a choice you and I must make as well. Laying aside our busyness—even our busyness for God—so that
we might focus our hearts on spending time alone with Him.

I hope you will find this devotional a helpful companion on your journey into God’s presence. I’ve interwoven excerpts from my three Bethany books: Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World, Having a Mary Spirit, and Lazarus Awakening. I’ve also included previously unpublished material that didn’t make it into my original books, each of which I’ve labeled “outtake.” A “Read and Reflect” section will help you dig into the life-changing Word of God for yourself, giving you opportunity to find the “better part” Mary enjoyed and the “one thing” I believe her sister Martha discovered as she received the rebuke of the Lord and found life for her soul.

Sprinkled throughout the year are “Going Deeper” sidebars to help you develop a daily quiet time, and in the back of the book you’ll find a unique one-year Bible reading guide that takes you back and forth between the Old Testament and the New (check out the downloadable format at www.becominghis.com). It is my prayer that you’ll fall in love with God’s Word in a brandnew way as you discover the message of grace woven throughout the Bible from beginning to end.

Down at the feet of Jesus. That’s where it all begins.

Lord Jesus, I give You my life.
I invite You to have Your way in me.
Take me and break me. Shake me and make me.
Fill me and spill me. Change me and rearrange me.
But whatever You do, Lord, don’t leave me the same.
Spirit of wisdom and revelation, I welcome Your work.
Open my eyes so I can see… my ears so I can hear…
I choose truth over comfort, challenge over complacency.
Lord, make me forever Yours.
And most of all, make me like You.
Amen.

January 1

I’ve always dreamed of being much more than I am. More organized, more disciplined, more loving…much more “much more,” if you know what I mean! Each January I set out on a new self-improvement program.
This year I’ll get in shape.
This year I’ll keep my house clean.
This year I’ll send out birthday cards. On time.
This year—really—I’ll be the loving, forgiving, obedient woman of God

I long to be instead of the willful, stubborn, disobedient Christian I sometimes see staring back at me in the mirror.

All noble goals. Truth be told, I am much more at peace when my house is clean. And I believe that if you really love people, you ought to care enough to send the very best—or at least one of those ninety-nine-cent cards from Wal-
Mart! And I know that genuine happiness only comes from living close to God and obeying Him.

I really do want to be different. I want to be changed.

As the saying goes, “There’s a skinny woman inside me just struggling to get out.” Unfortunately—as the saying continues—“I can usually sedate her with four or five cupcakes.”

Maybe you’ve discovered, as I have, that most New Year’s resolutions have little effect on day-to-day life except to add a burden of guilt and a feeling of failure. Continually striving, yet never arriving.

I’m so glad we have a Savior who loves us just as we are, but loves us too much to leave us that way. Jesus will do whatever it takes to return to us the glory of God that we were meant to reflect in the world. So that, through our
lives, people might see who God really is.

—Having a Mary Spirit

Read: Hebrews 4:14–16
Reflect: What does it mean to know that you have a high priest who understands your weakness?

"At the Feet Of Jesus" easily caught my eye, with is beautiful, but soothing cover. As I started reading some of the devotions I realized it had so much more going for it than just a beautiful cover. I really enjoyed the way each devotion was set up. They open with a Bible verse , then the devotion, a recommended scripture verse to read and then a reflection question.

I am a long time user of devotionals, and actually have several in my collection, but what really stands out with "At the Feet of Jesus" are the Going Deeper sections which are featured once a month. They not only allowed me to pause and reflect but more than that many of them provided useful ideas on how to grow closer spiritually to God. One of my favorite Going Deeper sections was for the month of September, which revolved around Bible Study helps, in which the author shares several approaches to Bible study. Another great tool that is included in this devotional is a unique one year Bible reading guide. The thing that makes this guide different than most that I have used is that it alternates between the Old and New Testament. I am going to use this guide beginning Jan 1, 2013 in the hopes of finally achieving my goal of making it thru the Bible in a year. This beautiful book would make a wonderful gift for the New Year. I have already incorporated this Devotional into my daily Bible study, and plan on using it thru the upcoming year.

How often do we find ourselves working on "something" for God? Get so wrapped up in the calling that you miss the Caller? In At the Feet of Jesus Joanna Weaver takes a whole year to get your heart back to being with Jesus. In this devotional, Weaver takes excerpts from a few of her best selling books (Having A Mary's Heart in a Martha World for example) and turns them into a devotional to challenge the heart and mind, bring us back into a relationship with God that we all deep down desire.

We don't have to do anything to get there: "The only requirement for a deeper relationship with God is showing up with an open heart and ready to receive." Weaver also includes a few Going Deeper areas as well as questions at the end of each day to really hone in on getting our hearts back into the God we are serving.

"The cross did more than pay for my sins; it set me free from the bondage of the 'shoulds' and 'if onlys' and 'what might have beens.' And Jesus's words to Martha are the words He wants to speak to your heart and mine: 'you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed (Luke 10:41-42)

The 'one thing' is not found in doing more.

It's found by sitting at His feet." (pg 4)

I didn't get to take the time to do this as intended and maybe if I did it would have been more for me. This wasn't at all what I was expecting. It's just a reworking of her other books into a devotional. She pulled apart some good books to make a years worth of separate daily readings. I feel, in doing that, she took away from the the power of her other books, especially Having a Mary's Heart in a Martha World. It seemed choppy and the flow was lacking. Don't get me wrong, her message is an important lesson we all need to learn. But you can get it with more passion and power in her other books.

First of all, I would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank you" to Joanna Weaver and her publisher for sending me a copy of "At the Feet of Jesus" to review for them. I am truly grateful for this generosity. I really appreciate the time, effort and expense it takes to make a reviewer copy available to me.

Joanna Weaver's new 366-day devotional book, "At the Feet of Jesus" is a beautiful guide for time spent with the Lord. The devotional text is comprised of excerpts from Weaver's wonderful books: "Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World", "Lazarus Awakening" and "Having a Mary Spirit". This encouraging volume would be a great holiday gift for yourself or someone else.

The "Going Deeper" sections offer encouragement, tips and techniques for activities such as journaling, memorizing scripture, praying God's word, creating a unique quiet time, personal Bible study and prayer. The unique, do-able Bible reading plan and instructions for how to create a personal reading plan at [...] is another great feature.

Joanna Weaver's new book At the Feet of Jesus: Daily Devotions to Nurture a Mary Heart has arrived...and since I first saw the announcement for this book I've been waiting with excitement. I've read her three other books and she's one of my favorite authors. Her devotional was written to help women defeat distraction and develop quiet time with God.

The devotional is a series of quotes and articles from her three books Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World, Having a Mary Spirit and Lazarus Awakening. Each daily session includes a quick overview of the topics discussed in these three books. The devotional also includes outtakes which were not previously published.

While I'm a huge fan of her books, I was disappointed in this devotional. Most of the content is not original since I've already read her books. It was also difficult to follow the devotional because some of the articles are based on book content and confusing if you don't know what she's referring to. For example, on Feb 20 she writes "Here are several ways you can beat the downward spiral of the Deadly D's in your life..." and does not teach her devotional readers what the "Deadly D's" are. You'd need to read Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World to understand this. I found this book frustrating and confusing to read.

I'm not recommending this book, though there are several others who did enjoy the devotional. The book cover and format is quite beautiful, the content was difficult to follow and understand. Instead, I'd suggest reading her amazing books Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World, Having a Mary Spirit and Lazarus Awakening.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own.
