Book Description

3 and upP and up

Jason loves fire engines. He wants to know all about firefighters, their clothes and their tools, their pumper trucks and their ladder trucks. And, when he gets a chance to sit in the driver's seat, he feesl just like a real firefighter, too.

Anne Rockwell, author of the termendously popular classics FIRE ENGINES and BIG WHEELS, invites young readers to a fun-filled day -- AT THE FIREHOUSE. This brightly colored, large-sized volume offers a new look inside the firehouse for fans of firefighters and fire trucks everywhere.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-A straightforward look at firefighters and the equipment they use. Rockwell's text follows young Jason as he tours the local firehouse, meets some firefighters, and even gets to sit in the driver's seat in the fire engines. True fans won't find much that's new here, but for some young listeners, it's a perfect introduction to the popular topic. All of the characters are Dalmatians, pictured standing upright and dressed in human clothes. At times it's difficult to determine which character is which, but their attire does help to differentiate among them. Rockwell's brightly colored illustrations are painted in a childlike style, though they include quite a few (occasionally blurred) details that belie their apparent simplicity. The enduring appeal of all things related to fire fighting as well as Rockwell's popularity ensure a place for this book in most libraries.

From Booklist

PreS-Gr. 2. At the firehouse on Visitor's Day, little Jason meets Captain Jack, sees where the firefighters live, watches them slide down the pole and dress for a fire, observes a demonstrations of the pumper and ladder trucks, and even sits in the driver's seats. Back at home, he builds a firehouse of blocks and dreams of riding to a fire with Captain Jack. The naive-style pictures, featuring objects and Dalmatian dog characters against white backgrounds, are clear, but the profusion of bright colors and patterns can actually make some objects difficult to discern and the compositions confusing to see as a whole. On the plus side, Rockwell has a good sense of what intrigues young children and offers just enough story to keep the presentation from becoming dry. For larger libraries. Carolyn Phelan

This review is from: At the Firehouse (Hardcover)
Two kids take a tour of a local fire station, seeing all the gear and even getting to sit in the seats and "steer" the fire engines. Kids will love this book... and after they read it, will want to visit their neighborhood fire station as well!
