Spike Pedersen's AT FIRST LIGHT is a great action story with the added advantage of hang gliders. The book follows the intersecting stories of Jesse Nickols, a young and rebellious twenty-something who falls in with a group of daredevil hang-gliders in Coloraid, and Piper Brown, a Southern debutante who relocates deep into the Amazon to help an isolated tribe in their war with a neighboring tribe. Without giving too much away, Jesse and his friends end up in the Amazon looking for a mythical waterfall to fly off, when they meet Piper and are enlisted in her war against the neighboring tribe.

There are a lot of things to like about this book ... chief among them is the fact that the outcome remains in doubt until the very last second. Too often, I approach books like this already knowing what will happen in the end; it's just a matter of how we get there. But Pedersen never gives us that luxury. He holds a knife to the throat of every character, including main characters, and I'm thinking of one scene in particular when I read with white knuckles wondering if someone was going to die.

And death abounds in this story, thanks to Tohanna. Tohanna rules the opposing tribe in the Amazon, and he is a splendid creation as far as bad guys go. Tohanna practices a kind of savagery that is totally believable, but one that couldn't work with an American bad guy. It would seem like overkill (ha ha). But armed with his machete, deep in the Amazon, there is the clear sense that Tohanna is capable of anything--and if you like your action tense, Tohanna delivers.

Overall, this is a good book I'd quickly recommend. Pedersen's writing is lush and evocative, his storytelling chops are first-rate, and his grasp of characters and pacing is a pleasure.

At First Light is an action packed volume of riveting storylines, strung out individually in first chapters, and woven together nicely to complete an amazing ending. Written graphically, one can touch the flora, the landscapes of cities, mountains or jungle and feel the gut-wrenching emotions and drama. All senses are awoke while traveling through a mapquest journey. Colorful writing prompt visual displays of athleticism, mother nature at her best (or worst) and ability to feel the souls of youthful adventurers and deep weathered elders holding vessels of wisdom. Pederson sparks his writing with flavors of romance, horror and soulful friendships, not necessarily in that order. Unlike other typical books I read, this one kept me on the edge of my seat. The novel reached out to me saying "don't put me down". A.F.L. - worth more than the kindle download price.

The title of this novel is deceptive. It sounds safe and cozy, does not conjure up the heart pounding excitement, tragic loss, or emotional entanglements that make up this excellent book. The main character Jesse Nickols is an adrenaline junky who loves to ride his motorcycle "at first light" along hairpin turns in Door County, Wisconsin. His adventuresome soul needs the trills. After quitting his job, he strikes out on a road of discovery. The trip takes him across the continent to meet other thrill seekers who "fly" hang gliders in hair-raising dives off mountains in British Columbia.

During the same time period Piper Brown arrives in Manuas, Brazil, a teeming city on the Amazon River. She's a spoiled rich kid who studied languages in college. Piper is totally unprepared when she confronts a dangerous thug who traffics in children. Impulsively Piper rescues Evenel, a little girl captured in the jungle, and plunges into the perilous mission to save the girl's tribe. When their two stories collide, the audacious team of hang gliders and Piper join forces to defeat a murderous adversary. Violence and death force the fun-loving vagabonds to mature quickly.

The vivid descriptions by the author are the most surprising and delightful element of this novel. Pedersen gives his readers lyrical portrayals of magnificent scenery, heart pounding passages of near-death antics, and poignant moments of sorrow. I'd never be tempted to "fly" a hang glider but this book provided that experience (safely in my own home). Spike Pedersen is a talented writer with stories to tell about fascinating characters. Read this adventure and you'll become another fan.

At First Light grabbed you from the first chapter and kept you hanging the whole time. I found it was very hard to put down, just wanted to keep reading.
Full of adventure, Spike kept you on the edge of your seat with amazing detail that put you right there in the action. Just when you thought you knew what the outcome would be Spike kept you guesting.
I strongly recommend At First Light to everyone, because it has it all adventure, murder, suspense and romance.

Jump start your usual book-reading fix with a story that gets you engaged and involved from beginning to end. The book begins with two separate story lines - of Jesse and his hang-gliding, adventurous friends who eventually find their way to the Amazon, seeking their next wild escapade, and the other story - of Piper, a linguist who finds herself thrust into the role of reuniting a native child with her tribal village. The author creatively fuses these two stories together to ultimately draw you into a harrowing world of tribal genocide and danger.

There's more to this story though...the characters are all very real and fleshed-out, each with their own lovable quirks and vulnerabilities that make you feel as if you personally know them. Combine this with heart-stopping suspense and action, a liberal dose of humor, and a sweet, yet steamy romance, this is a great book to escape in and transport you from the mundane!

All in all, I really enjoyed At First Light - we can all recognize parts of ourselves in this story of a group of people that are stretched emotionally and physically to be their very best and do the right thing.
