4.0 out of 5 stars Great Live Versions Of Mr. Monroe's Best Songs, March 12, 2000
By
This review is from: At His Best (Audio CD)
From "Uncle Pen" to "Footprints In The Snow", many of Mr. Monroe's best songs are here. You also hear instrumentals like "Bluegrass Breakdown" and "Orange Blossom Special". Everyone loves "Muleskinner Blues" and "Blue Moon Of Kentucky" and they're both here as well as "The Prison Song". This set closes with the classic "Can't You Hear Me Calling", which has to be one of the most "lonesome" sounding songs in Bluegrass Music and "Nine Pound Hammer" which is always a toe tapper. While this CD is not the original studio recordings of these songs, these live versions are really well done, and for the price, you can't beat this collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't Miss CD, January 20, 2001
This review is from: At His Best (Audio CD)
Not a bad song on it. If you are new to bluegrass like me or even someone more seasoned you will like this CD. You can't listen to "Orange Blossom Special" and not be moved. Showcases many of Monroe's great songs. I love it and my two year old son loves it too. He can't sit still while it's on.

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific intro, August 18, 2005

These '80s concert recordings combine modern sound with back-porch freshness & flash. Don't be put off by the absence of Vassar Clements, Earl Scruggs, Lester Flatt & company--whoever these guys were, this is hillbilly jazz of the very first quality. I agree with Robert Hall that there's "Not a bad song on it," but I'm surprised David Ferrell didn't mention "Footprints in the Snow," which to me is one of the phattest jams ever in any style. As live albums go, this one's right up there. Alison Krauss fans, come a-runnin'!

Bill Monroe was one the truely great artists of the twentieth century, combining Blue Grass style music with traditional Folk songs in an appealing combination that only he could accomplish. This album contains one of my favorite songs that he recorded, entitled, Uncle Pen
