I read good strong, positive reviews before taking a chance on this cd. I liked it immediately upon buying it. Now it has become one of my favorites! 2.0 out of 5 stars OK, but a bit too wimpy and derivative for me
This is super-happy kitschy high-pitched-vocals bubblegum stuff.

I guess I was looking for just a little bit more bite. The vocals are entirely wimpy and fey. We're not talking Monkees-bubblegum here, we're talking 1910 Fruitgum Company or even (gasp!) Lancelot Link & the Evolution Revolution.

The music is also very obviously derivative. These aren't just...

This disc is fantastic! If you like 60's pop music, I think you'll love this disc. Still popping it in the changer 5 years after its release...reminds me most of 60's bubble gum pop. Catchy tunes that will stick with you long after the last song finishes. You'll be pressing your player's "full repeat" button!

5.0 out of 5 stars how does it get any better, August 20, 2001
This review is from: At Home With (Audio CD)
This is one of those rare cds that you find only a few times. A friend said it best" like finding a gem in the midst of so much clutter". There are so many good songs on the cd it's hard to pick out the best songs. My favorites are "Like A Star" and "She's In Love Again" with several more a close second. The sound is fresh but also makes me feel like I'm back in High School again. This cd should by anyone's account be at the very top of your list to acquire if you don't already have it. Steve Ward's solo project is also a must. By all means HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite CD of 1999, December 13, 1999
This review is from: At Home With (Audio CD)
This album shimmers, punches, and rocks, all in a soft, dreamy, ringing sort of way. If you're a fan of 60s music, especially The Beach Boys, you'll probably like this CD. At the same time, At Home With Cherry Twister has its own fresh sound that cannot be compared to anything else. I haven't stopped listening to it since I bought it in April of this year. Every song has its own magic; this CD has me constantly swaying with the melody or tapping my feet to the infectious rhythm. This album demands more eloquence than I am capable of, but my sincerest recommendation will just have to do!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Hidden Gem, January 27, 2001

This effort by Steve Ward and Cherry Twister is phenomenal. Though Cherry Twister is often described as a blast from the past, it is the same as saying Sloan is like the Beatles. Both are somewhat true, but neither provides the full story. The band twists Power Pop in its own unique way with simply amazing guitar riffs and heavenly vocal harmonies along with some more interesting beats than your run-of-the-mill power pop-ers. The little things make the album too; take Leila for example: the little "ahhhh"'s between phrases really adds to the replay value of this song. Cherry Twister dabbles in all sorts of sounds in this album; they even flirt with a bit of a folk/country sound in "Careful." Also check out Steve's recent solo album at the CherryTwister(.com) homepage. This album has been described as the follow-up to "At Home With..." and is just as good (if not better) than this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars the future of pop, January 1, 2001
This review is from: At Home With (Audio CD)
Cherry twister is the most promising popband I know. They've got the songs, the lyrics and the voices ( maybe not the looks but who cares ? ). Their music is an unique mixture of powerpop and retropop with superb hooks. For whom it may concern : check out the solo-album of frontman : Steve Ward. It's called "opening night" and it's almost as good as this one

5.0 out of 5 stars Catchy, Melodic Pop Tunes Throughout, October 16, 1999

WOW!! Man, am I glad I stumbled onto this band. This is one hell of a CD. Pop music at its finest. More people need to hear this band. One of the best CD's I have bought in, geez, atleast 5 years. 60's influenced, Beach Boy harmonies, even a hint of 50's-esque vocals, all sounding more fresh and original than anything out there. Here's hoping that many more "stumble" onto this band, as these guys need a bigger audience. This CD is kinda hard to get a hold of, but it is very much worth the effort. Get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal songs, impeccably performed., April 18, 2003

This disc is a total delight. The tunes are infectious, the lyrics bright and witty, and the arrangements are true to -- but not slavishly imitative of -- the sixties pop sensibility.

Top Twister Steve Ward is a power pop genius. If he'd been born 50 years ago, he'd have been divorced several times by now, have earned and blown three or four fortunes, and be the object of vague rumors involving the untimely demise of some loathesome late seventies record company exec.

But *this* is his time, and *this* is his disc -- at least one of them. Another, his solo effort, the more recent "Opening Night," is also a must-acquire.

One interesting thing about Steve's work is that all his tunes are strong. There are no throwaways. I particularly like 'Charlotte B.', 'I'll Be the Lonely Boy Tonight', and 'Maryann.' But they're all really good, so my favorites rotate.

This really is one of my all-time faves. If you like the Beatles and the Wondermints and the Hollies -- well crafted songs, nicely produced -- you're gonna love Cherry Twister.

Promise.

5.0 out of 5 stars album (ok, CD) of the year, August 13, 1999
By A Customer

Best CD of the year. All of the songs are catchy and hook-filled. Kind of a Beach Boys/Cheap Trick feel, especially in "Lonely Boy" (or, in "Black Summer", a Ramones/Beach Boys feel). A new favorite song every time I listen. This CD is in my all-time top 20 favorites, easy. And that's saying a lot!

5.0 out of 5 stars Old but fresh sound, August 16, 2005

I'm a big lover of power pop music and I like very much this record, that I have discovered through Amazon browsing by styles and references.

About music, nowadays many people thinks that it's important to be original. I don't think so. Join talent, creativity and passion and boom. Then you have to find people that likes this blending. It' happen when the music has a style that fits your taste and a flavor that moves your memories. It's impossible always create a really new sound in our world, with tons of information. And always other people born. Man and woman that never have heard the huge musical legacy of the last fifty years.

Cherry Twister, leaded by Steve Ward (that have released two great solo albums) is a home band that just recorded one CD, this one.

Soft voices (a little bit high-pitched voices), profusion of chorus and backing vocals, tremolo guitars, etc, but everything in function of very inspiring tunes, arrangements played by experienced musicians.

I'm very impressed by the record quality.

1) Don't forget your man (7/10) - Good tune but a little bit repetitive. Interesting arrangement.

2) Sparkle (8/10) - Great but I hate the "uh-uh-uh" part. Completely kitsch and dispensable. Maybe the two first songs of this album have influenced the All Music Guide critic, that gave 2.5/5 quote for this album.

3) Meteorite (9/10) - Very pleasant song and almost updated!

4) Charlotte B. (8/10) - good song, but not special. Some parts more inspired.

5) I'm Gonna Be the Lonely Boy Tonite (9/10) - Nice guitar in a tasteful song.

6) American Nightlife (6/10) - Instrumental filler.

7) Leila (10/10) - Carry you in a travel deep inside the almost blue sky.

8) She's Gone (9/10) - Soft and delicate tune. It remembers me "Beach Boys"

9) Maryann (9/10) - Also a more modern song, like "Meteorite". It seems like "Fountains of Wayne".

10) Black Summer (8/10) - Lightly upbeat "Posies" style ("Dear 23").

11) Brighten Up (7/10) - OK song. Music change from the cheesy slow part to upbeat routine part

12) Kinda Like a Star (9/10) - Also evokes me "Fountains of Wayne" with good guitar arrangement.

13) She's in Love Again (9/10) - Beautiful song with "America" style.

14) Til I'm Blue (9/10) - "Kinks" style song.

15) Careful (Can't Fall Again) (9/10)- Crying guitars and 60 style song.

16) Why Won't You Believe in me (6/10) - A little bit boring lullaby song.
