Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8-Three-to-five page insightful biographies of the 41 presidents of the United States. Salient facts are interspersed with small, personal stories that reveal something of each man's nature. Morris does a good job of covering a number of defining incidents or anecdotes and is fair and balanced in her presentation. The book has small, black-and-white photographs or portraits of all of the presidents and of their homes or memorials as well as the addresses, hours, cost of admission, and Web sites (where applicable) of the historic sites. Sidebars such as Patti Davis's (Ronald Regan's daughter) advice to Chelsea Clinton about living in the White House are humorous and interesting. Morris presents such intriguing facts mixed with the mundane that readers will want to know more. For example, John Tyler's family still lives in the family home that has been a working plantation for over 240 years. Younger readers will find just enough material for a report and older students will discover the man behind the history. This worthwhile book also has browsing appeal.

From Kirkus Reviews

At Home With The Presidents (176 pp.; $12.95; Sept. 24; 0-471-25300-6) Morris offers succinct biographical information and anecdotes about all 41 presidents with brief information about homes they grew up it, historic sites dedicated to them, or libraries in which their artifacts are housed. Included are small pictures of the presidents and some of the buildings discussed. Readers will find the book of limited use for research, since the sources for quotations are not given, there is no index, and material considered controversial is not attributed. Appearing out of context are statements such as ``George Washington adored his older brother'' and ``George's mother was jealous of the two brother's relationship.'' The information on historic sites is upbeat but bland, and could have come right out of tourist brochures. The children (ages 6 and 9) and I love this book. It's informative, and easy to utilize. It's a good resource to have on hand.
