Gr. 10-12. The At Issue in History series usually explores topics of the past (the Emancipation Proclamation, human medical trials, and Watergate), but this volume tackles a current conflict, albeit from a focus that centers primarily on events of 2001. Point-and-counterpoint essays and speeches, contributed by major political leaders such as Bush and Rumsfeld and by noted authors and historians, give balanced arguments for and against the attack prompted by 9/11. Each essay is subdivided into small, manageable sections for teen readers, and significant quotations are repeated in boxes. Although politically pointed, strong arguments from both views are well supported. Most helpful of all are the informative foreword and the chronology, which traces the history of Afghanistan from 300 B.C.E. to November 2004. A few grainy black-and-white photos illustrate.

Review
"Because of the even-handed presentation, the title makes a strong and lasting impression. The writings are well chosen. A thoughtful and well-delineated addition."

"This collection of primary-source material presents a well-balanced treatise on who knew what, and when, and who was responsible. This title deals with a debate that is seldom addressed."

"As with books in the long-running Opposing Viewpoints series, the excerpts here clearly express opposing opinions on an issue...The effect of the entire volume is to create an informative, many-sided representation."
