Book Description

July 14, 2002
Reluctant sleuth Josephine Fuller is back, and this time she can't resist throwing her weight around. Fuller is working as a philinthropic investigator at a women's center in Seattle when she is faced with the mysterious death of her ex-husband's girlfriend, a woman that Fuller herself wouldn't have minded seeing vanish. She also has other things to deal with, such as a haunted house and a love denied. But the death is intermingled with the women's work center and ultimately this draws her into the case. At once the chief investigator and primary suspect Fuller has a lot in her large hands.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Queen-sized investigator Josephine Fuller has an appealing (i.e., not self-deprecating) sense of humor; moreover she's comfortable with her body and confident in her abilities. In her third adventure (after Large Target and Larger Than Death), she wrestles with the murder of her ex-husband's girlfriend, angry vibes disturbing her apartment and a sleazy ex-con who's wormed his way into the heart and bed of her friend Maxine. The loosely constructed plot allows Seattle-based Josephine ample room to explore romance ("as a large-sized woman, I've developed extra-sensitive radar for men who see me as a sexual being, versus men who see a surrogate mom") and to consort with a cast of unusual and sometimes amusing characters such as ex-husband Griffin Fuller, photographer and congenital philanderer, and Isadora Freechild, lesbian and mountain-climbing author of Finding Your Vegetarian Inner Child. The murder of Francesca Etheridge, Isadora's sister and Griffin's girlfriend (and the probable cause of the split between Josephine and Griffin), provides the grist, but produces plenty of chaff too. Too many characters, too many blind alleys and some unexplained discrepancies weaken this entry in a series that has considerable promise. If Josephine's future cases offer challenges that match her size, she will be a formidable character.

From Booklist

"Of all the women's job skill centers in all the towns in all the Pacific Northwest, he walks into mine." This first sentence sets the tone for the sassy, brassy Jo Fuller's life of one-liners and emotional missteps. Teddy, the man who walks into Jo's job center, is the husband of Francesca, the woman Jo's ex, Griffin, left her for. Griff is a famed (and lecherous) photographer who became involved with Francesca when he photographed her mountain-climbing expedition. Francesca ends up dead, stabbed with one of her own mountain ice picks, and thus starts a merry chase with ex-spouses and ex-lovers turning up everywhere. New Age self-help, film stars turned politicians, and lesbian chic are affably satirized: Jo herself, a full-figured woman of the Camryn Manheim variety, has some acerbic things to say about how the world treats fat girls. This is a quick, intriguing series debut; one hopes that, in her next adventure, Jo will spend less time with her cat, Raoul, and more with Mulligan, who shares cat care and moves in downstairs. More About the Author

I came to San Francisco to go to college, got captivated by the city, and have not left for long since then. It is the perfect setting for any kind of fiction. It's good ground to conjure up fog and dark nights for paranormal activities in The Falstaff Vampire Files, sunshine on the Bay for the romantic comedy in Bride of the Living Dead, and even as jumping off ground to investigate bit of murder as in the Josephine Fuller mysteries.

I share an apartment with a small group of extremely mellow cats, who are all either rescued or formerly feral.

Aside from novels, I've written humorous short pieces that have appeared in magazines and newspapers. Many of these articles, including the most fun one of all--an interview of Darlene Cates, star of What's Eating Gilbert Grape--available on my website at www.lmurray.com.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun reading about a woman who lives life, July 14, 2001

Very enjoyable books, these three, and the most recent is the best yet. Amateur sleuth Jo Fuller is a real person - living a real life - yet getting involved in solving crimes on the side. Love the full figured point of view - nice change from what we usually see - and a much more realistic view of women.

This book was a great deal more fun than the first of Ms. Fuller's novels. Excellent character development, a much better plot and a few ice axes thrown in for fun. A good solid read for the beach.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dlightful summer ad, June 19, 2001
Jo Fuller is working underground for her wealthy philanthropist boss Mrs. Madrone at a job skill center in Bremeton, Washington. However, her efforts to see if the center is worthy of financial support are interrupted when Teddy Etheridge enters the center. The last time Teddy and Jo saw one another was in Kathmandu when their spouses found love in one anther's arms. Teddy pleads with Jo to help him find his missing love Lucille Meeker, a full-bodied woman like Jo.

Jo learns that Lucille caused problems for the center by pretending to be a client while stealing a computer from Fransesca who remains Teddy's estranged wife. Jo goes to visit Fransesca only to find someone murdered the woman. Jo's former husband Griffin Fuller is the prime suspect as he has just broken off with Fransesca. Perhaps it is for old time's sake but Jo decides to investigate the crime because she knows that Griffin is a sleaze but not a killer.

MO<The third "large" amateur sleuth tale is an entertaining story starring a larger-than-life heroine. The who-done-it is fun though the killer seems obvious (think motive). Jo remains a fresh character, but the references to her size and that of Lucy's seem overdone. Still Lynn Murray writes tales that make the Northwest sing and her latest AT LARGE will do that and more for the audience.
