not so screamin', August 31, 2000
This review is from: At Last (Audio CD)
It is sort of sad that this well titled Swansong should be such a disapointment. I am a serious fan of this underated blues legend, but I must say that since I bought this back in 98 I have hardly played it at all, and hold on to it just to preserve my collection. A few tracks are enjoyable, especially his version of I SHOT THE SHERRIF, but overall this is a bummer. Although I liked SOMETHING FUNNY GOING ON and absolutely loved STONE CRAZY, I still have to stand by the old cliche of "his older stuff was better" because in this case it is true. P.S. Rest in peace, Screamin' Jay, you continue to put a spell on us all.

Give it a chance and it'll grow on you., January 23, 2000

All Jay Hawkins' music take time to acquire, including this one. I'd say that if you've never hear of him, you'll probably dislike what you hear (like Tom Waits). However, give it a chance, it'll grow on you. The last reviewer gave a bad review to this CD,however, if you're a fan, and played it a couple of times, you'll enjoy it more and more with each play. Of all my Jay Hawkins' CDs (and I have lots), as it turned out, this is the one I play the most.
