4.0 out of 5 stars Genuine original recordings of the late great Fats at the Pipe Organ!, December 28, 2006

This review is from: At the Organ 1926-1929 3 (Audio CD)
I am a big fan of the Theatrical Pipe Organ [as compared with the Liturgical or church organ, which has its own place in a music lover's library], and have collected recordings of Fats Waller playing the Estey Pipe Organ in Camden NJ, and the Compton Theatre Organ at Abbey Road Studios [where Glenn Miller and The Beatles also recorded!] - so when I saw this for sale I bit, put it on the box, and was treated to the sound of the 78 rpm disc originals lovingly transferred to digital, with reasonably well-suppressed surface noise and surprisingly clear ambience. My only complaint about this disc is that they rolled off the bass below 100 cycles per second, and a Pipe Organ recording sans deep bass is somewhat like a marching band sans bass drum! Other than that, I recommend this disc highly to Pipe Organ fans, just to expose them to real Jazz on the Pipes!
Pipe Organs are NOT just for classical music, they truly are the king of instruments and can play ANYTHING! Fats Waller was the king of the Jazz organists, and the Estey Organ featured on this CD [earlier, this same organ wss recorded-on by the Poet of the Organ himself, Jesse Crawford - a little bit of interesting background info there] was a fine-sounding instrument indeed.
