4.0 out of 5 stars Life after Argent, January 18, 2000

This review is from: At The Third Stroke (Audio CD)
Most music fans remember Russ Ballard (if they recognize the name at all!) as guitarist/vocalist for 1970's British prog-rockers Argent. Although the band's "leader" was ex-Zombies keyboardist Rod Argent, Russ Ballard was thier secret weapon, penning some of the better Argent tunes. "At The Third Stroke" is one of his better solo efforts, featuring his always excellent songwriting, vocal and guitar playing skills. Standout tracks include "Helpless" and "Dancer". If you enjoy mid 70's jazz-rock-pop hybrid (think McDonald-era Doobies or Bob Welch-era Fleetwood Mac), you'll enjoy this one!

This is a strong album from Russ, when I first heard it, I remember wondering how I missed it on it;s initial release, well I have it now and I am really glad I do. It is a pure late 70's album, and for someone who had a hard time finding anything to like about that decade, this is one album that was a plus. From the opening track to the closing, it shines as a strong lp, from one of the most talented artists around.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Of Russ Ballard's Best Solo Albums, March 24, 2009

This review is from: At The Third Stroke (Audio CD)
AT THE THIRD STROKE is one of Russ Ballard's best solo albums ever. Among the great songs here is "Cast The Spirit", which is a song about making sure that you do what your heart says is right. I used to play this song on my old school's radio station, and during the period of 1993-2004, I promised a number of young women that I would heed its message when choosing songs for us to dance to together rather than just ask them for dances to the style du jour. I feel that the song has a good message for anyone in a similar situation, and should not be ignored, even if you end up being called a freak by some of your peers. This album sounds like a cross between several different artists, including Ballard's former band, Argent, Fleetwood Mac, Traffic, BROTHERS AND SISTERS-era Allman Brothers Band, and Steely Dan. This is a CD that you must own.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great overlooked album, June 13, 2006
This review is from: At The Third Stroke (Audio CD)
At the Third Stroke is a truly great overlooked album. Contains two of the best songs ever written in the Rock Era - the haunting "Cast the Spirit" and the equally compelling piano laced "My Judgement Day" Incredible!
