Editorial Reviews

Review

...Ron Agam's photos are very moving. I feel a deep emotional connection to them overtime I look at them. -- Madonna

Individually, his photographs are frozen in time moments but collectively they tell a compelling story about the struggles an d triumph of the Jewish people. -- From the Introduction, Rudolph W. Giuliani, Mayor of New York City

With a wondering eye, in the complex tapestry of Jerusalemite people, Ron Agam has focused on a world of yesteryear frozen in time and space, which was once anchored at the eastern wall of a far away synagogue in a shtetl, but now nests in the vicinity of the Western Wall of the destroyed Temple, and the man with a camera has replaced the Chassidic storyteller and the fiddler on the roof. -- Moshe Lazar, Professor of Drama and Comparative Literature, University of Southern California

3.0 out of 5 stars Good pictures, but lacks a coherent point of view., April 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: At the Wall (Hardcover)
Ron Agam, Yaakov's son, is an accomplished photographer, as is evident in this book. The photographs included depict the activities of the haredim in Jerusalem, at the Kotel and elsewhere. The pictures are good, all in black and white, and manage to catch the various emotions of the ultra-Orthodox as they go about their daily lives, mostly in prayer.

The problem with the book is that it doesn't live up to its title. Only half the pictures are taken at the Kotel. The others are in the Meah Shearim, and other haredi institutions. Once he's away from the Wall, there is no coherent point of view, either of the subject matter, or what the pictures are meant to convey.

As a coherent photo essay, the book is lacking in (forgive me) focus. As a collection of good pictures, it works.
