The irony of this book is that Joel Meyerowitz often photographs with an 8x10 view camera which produce 8x10 inch negatives that had to be shrunken in size to fit this book which is not even 5 inches wide. Those early 1900s photographers who believed in contact printing everything would be horrified :)

That being said the book is full of gorgeous images (5 stars all the way) and surprisingly despite its size I was moved emotionally by a number of photos here as they brought back nostalgic memories of the beach. The book is indeed a "cute" gift size. But one wonders who exactly is the target demographic they are trying to reach. Serious art critics and photographers? Well if they are anything like me they would want to see Mr. Meyerowitz's work in its full glory printed in as large a book as possible and on the nicest paper possible (not this semi-cheap stock). Or is the demographic casual photography observers? While they might enjoy some of the pictures here I doubt most casual photography observers would really get what Meyerowitz is all about. I find this book a bit of a misfire.
