This review is from: At Work: The Art of California Labor (Paperback)
This volume is an outstanding contribution to the history of twentieth-century art in general, as well art related to labor movements, gender studies, and cultural identity. It is not limited in interest to California history, but rather the state's importance to agriculture and industry (including shipping and logging) has helped generate a large body of artwork related to the theme of labor. Many of the artists were immigrants from other countries, and are included because their works were produced in California. The commentary by various scholars, including the volume editor, is well-researched, informative, and easy to read. The numerous illustrations are reproduced with outstanding quality. An index would have been helpful, but in every other respect this is a wonderful book for both scholars and general readers.
