Book Description

A new and evocative Regency historical novel from rising star Meredith Duran, an author for whom, as Fresh Fiction said, “readers need to make room on their keeper shelf.”

By candlelight, she lures him…

Glittering court socialites and underworld cutpurses alike know that Adrian Ferrers, Earl of Rivenham, is the most dangerous man in London. Rivenham will let nothing—not the deepening shadow of war, nor the growing darkness within him—interfere with his ambition to restore his family to its former glory. But when tasked by the king to uncover a traitor, he discovers instead a conspiracy—and a woman whose courage awakens terrible temptations. To save her is to risk everything. To love her might cost his life.

At swordpoint she defies him…

Lady Leonora knows that Rivenham is the devil in beautiful disguise—and that the irresistible tension between them is as unpredictable as the dilemma in which Nora finds herself: held hostage on her own estate by Rivenham and the king’s men. But when war breaks out, Nora has no choice but to place her trust in her dearest enemy—and pray that love does not become the weapon that destroys them both…

No fairy tale love for the H and h of this book. They manage their HEA only through blood, sweat and tears and the reader is along for the emotional rollercoaster ride with them. I was wowed by this HR. It's a mass market paperback "tour de force", one of those that doesn't come along very often, very well written and very deserving of the classification "historical".

Most HRs take place either in Regency England, early 1800s, or Victorian England (1837-1901) with the occasional Georgian, but the Georgians I've read usually take place during the reign of George III. This Georgian takes place in 1715, at the end of the reign of Queen Anne and the beginning of that of George I, the German-speaking Hanoverian transplanted to rule England. It's a time of unrest between the Papists and the Protestants, with the Papist Jacobites favoring Scottish James Stuart's claim to the throne rather than German George I.

Our hero and heroine are caught in this unrest. Years ago they had been lovers. Politics, religion and the heroine's own family separated them cruelly. She married another, he aligned himself politically with Queen Anne and later King George I, while her father and brother became Jacobites and are persona non grata to the English government.

Six years after their estrangement circumstances bring them together. It's not an easy romance to read. Time and misunderstandings have done quite a number on their relationship, which seems to have changed from love to distrust and even hatred. However, this is a romance and you read it assuming that all will be well at the end, though you may have doubts about the HEA many times along the way.

It's truly the best HR I've read in many moons.

5.0 out of 5 stars My new favorite book by this author March 29, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
Warning: this book has some very dark parts. Do not read it if you just want a fluffy feel-good story, but read ahead if you are okay with traveling right down to the very lowest point with only the trust that the author will get you through to a happy ending to keep you going! At certain points reading this book, I just kept exclaiming "Oh my god!", because the mood was so intense. But, to be honest, that is part of the reason why I like Meredith Duran's books so much. She doesn't scare away from making her characters dark and fascinatingly flawed, and then putting them under a whole lot of pressure so we can see what happens. I want to compare her to Laura Kinsale, or maybe Joanna Bourne, as far as general story tone and general language genius-ry goes.

Things I can say without spoiling this book:
1. The historical setting is quite interesting, but Duran focuses more on the conflict between the two main characters and doesn't sketch things out from the History 101 level. I actually don't think it's necessary to know the background 100%, but it does add some nice external conflict details.
2. The relationship is incredibly romantic in my opinion, but I'm a sucker for second chance stories. Again, it is also pretty dark/twisty.
3. Duran's heroes are usually pretty ruthless, and the hero here doesn't disappoint at all! Holy crap. Her characters always have so much going on that it makes me realize just how flat some other books characters can be.
5.. Awesome book. I definitely recommend it!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my Meredith Duran favorites March 29, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
My guilty pleasure books are Meredith Duran novels. Why? Because she creates these amazing settings and characters that make me believe in the romance. They are the kind of characters that you can't put in other novels because they're singularly affected by their experiences and each has his/her individual faults; in short, they're unforgettable and unique.

Romance novels where the player is chasing after the girl and the girl can't resist him and she's a minx/siren/tease/temptress/etc. because she's the one person who somehow manages to capture his attention--they bore me. They are a dime a dozen. This book is not one of them.

My absolute favorite type of romance? The rekindling of passion and man does Meredith Duran hit it on this note. There was SO much to unpack in Nora & Adrian's past, and I was constantly surprised and enthralled by the sparring nature of their conservation... and even when they deal with past betrayals and misunderstandings, there's still the future and the inevitable betrayal / disagreement in that regard.

Admittedly sometimes I did get confused by the political / religious situation, but that didn't detract from the romance for me. My favorite from Meredith Duran remains THE DUKE OF SHADOWS, but AT YOUR PLEASURE is definitely in the top 3.

If you have any questions, feel free to comment on this, and I'll try my best to answer you. Sorry this review isn't more thorough--I'm still in that stage of rereading the book because I loved it so much.

2.0 out of 5 stars I had such high hopes..! April 23, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The book synopsis and reviews were so reminiscent of Judith McNaught to me that I was convinced I needed to give this a go. The beginning was great and the story unfolded beautifully. I cherish flawed characters and dark romances where the characters make it work, together, against all odds and their own twisted fates. I had very high expectations. I guess that alone ruined the book for me as I was expecting too much from the characters.

Nora is very brave, shown to have a blend of feminine and masculine traits (for that time period). Adrian loved her for these. I wish the author had written more about the characters' history in real time, so to speak, rather than having them relate to it. I wish the first scene, for example, had been written from Nora's point of view. My heart went out to Adrian, all of it, and there was nothing left for Nora. If Nora's side had been there, perhaps then I would have felt more sympathy for her and forgiven her pigheadedness in the actual story. She forgave her family all the wrongs they had done her, but could not bring herself to listen to or understand the actions of the man who loved her most. I constantly wanted to shake the woman to see, talk and behave sense! I just could not digest her unthinking, stubborn loyalty to her family and no understanding for Adrian. McNaught wrote very similar heroines but they redeemed themselves so beautifully that I forgave them their idiocy. But I'm more than halfway done (Uh, should I have mentioned before that I cannot bring myself to finish it?), and Nora is pigheaded as ever. I just cannot call this pigheadedness 'loyalty' or 'bravery'. Once again, I wish the author had written fewer scenes with the heroine hitting and stabbing the hero (There ARE other ways to manage a controlling male!

4.0 out of 5 stars not bad
This book is hefty. It throws its weight around. No light moments here. It's worth reading in a sobering sort of way.

Starts very strong. Bogs down a bit in the middle. The hero and heroine need to talk to each other. I liked the slow reveal of the underlying problems.
