The Atago 1410 DR-A1 is a benchtop multi-wavelength Abbe refractometer for refractive index measurement 1.3278 to 1.7379 (wavelength 450nm), 1.3000 to 1.7100 (wavelength 589nm), 1.2912 to 1.7011 (wavelength 680nm), and 1.2743 to 1.6840 (wavelength 1,100nm) of liquid and solid samples such as glass, plastic, lenses, rubber, solid films, and food and beverages with a 5 to 50 degrees C temperature range, has an LCD digital display of measurement readings, and an analog display of the boundary line. Refractometers are commonly used in the optical, chemical, geological, ecological, culinary, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, and educational industries, and for water-testing applications.
This refractometer has an Abbe condenser to enhance resolution. The Atago 1410 DR-A1 refractometer is housed in a durable, die-cast aluminum metal body for resistance to heat and organic solvents. It can be connected to a circulating constant temperature bath (sold separately) for specimen temperature control. A digital LCD displays the measurement reading and a monocular, focusable, cushioned eyepiece provides for cross-hair boundary line setting. The analog scale provides a high-contrast display with a dark bottom half and bright top half for clear visibility of the boundary (measurement) and memory intersection lines, and has a cross-hair refraction view for measurement. Display colors vary by the chosen wavelength, and an adjustable knob provides color (boundary) alignment. A near infrared ray viewer (sold separately) can be connected for measurement at wavelengths in the 681 to 1100nm range. The refractometer can connect with an Atago digital printer (sold separately) to print out the number of samples, measurement results, and measured temperature. The refractometer can be calibrated with distilled water. The Atago 1410 DR-A1 model is supplied with a combination power supply/light source unit. The light source comes with a stand and guide to direct a light at the lighting window of the secondary prism, as well as 589nm and 546nm interference filters to change the wavelength of the emitted light, a lighting glass for film measurement, and a spare light bulb. A digital LCD on the power supply/light source unit displays information about the light source, such as the interference filter number and the wavelength. The power supply/light source unit has a 6-foot power cord and complies with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. The refractometer also comes with ten plastic tube bands, which work like zip ties to tighten the tubes for water temperature control of the water bath. In addition, the instrument comes with a test piece with refractive index of 1.516 to practice solid sample measurement, a 4ml bottle of monobromnaphthalene as contact liquid for solid sample measurement, an Allen wrench for prism replacement, two silica gel packets to protect the instrument during shipping and storage, a test report, an inspection certificate, and an instruction manual.

Refractometers are used to determine substance content in a sample, to provide unit readings of substances including Brix, salinity, and alcohol; to detect chemical impurities, or to measure components of samples such as industrial fluid. Refractometers measure the refractive index of a substance, which is its optical characteristic, and the number of dissolved particles in it. The refractive index is the ratio of the speed of light in empty space to the speed of light in a substance; when light passes from one medium to another. Generally, a low concentration sample has a larger angle of refraction than a high concentration sample. For example, a straw placed in a high-concentration substance appears more bent than when placed in a low-concentration substance. Refractometers can work with natural light, or with an external power source such as batteries or electricity. They typically have either a digital or analog reading display, though some units utilize both types. Some analog-display refractometers can be used for both solids and liquids. Digital-display refractometers are used exclusively for liquids. Types of refractometers include handheld, benchtop, and in-process. Handheld refractometers are elongated and telescope-shaped, or shorter and rectangular. Analog handheld refractometer readings are obtained by looking through the monocular eyepiece and viewing where the boundary line intersects with the memory line. Digital handheld models provide a digital readout. Benchtop refractometers typically measure with a higher degree of accuracy than handheld units. In-process refractometers are used for continuous process monitoring and data readouts, and are generally fitted into a piping system for ongoing analysis. Refractometers are used in a wide variety of applications in the culinary, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, educational, geological, chemical, ecological, and automotive industries, and for water-testing applications.
