4.0 out of 5 stars attractive book, June 25, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Atanarjuat, The Fast Runner (Paperback)
Nice book for fans of the movie. The screenplay in both
English and Inuktitut, many glossy photos (both movie shots and
other related material), and background info both on the movie
and on Inuit culture, history, geography, etc. I would've
liked even more background information, for example on the
language of the movie, on its reception, on the actors, etc.
If your looking for a gift for someone who was into the movie,
good choice. (Especially if that someone is you yourself.)

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific companion for a brilliant movie, September 15, 2011

This review is from: Atanarjuat, The Fast Runner (Paperback)
This volume is a fantastic companion to the award-winning movie Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner. It includes the script in both Inuktitut and an English translation and notes on the culture and time period where the movie is set. Both sets of text are accompanied by stills from the movie and from Isuma Productions' meticulous recreations of traditional activities relevant to the film. The book is both a celebration of Inuit culture and a helpful explanation for viewers unfamiliar with it. One of the qualities I love most about the film is how it expresses a core principle of traditional education: creating the conditions for understanding in a non-didactic way. Instead of handing the viewer explanations and interpretations, the film brings the viewer into Atanarjuat's world and allows the viewer's understanding to expand. The book is such a great partner in that it provides further context and background but enhances rather than detracts from this non-coercive educational aim.
