Product Description

The Atari 2600 is a video game console released in October 1977. It is credited with popularizing the use of microprocessor-based hardware and cartridges containing game code, instead of having non-microprocessor dedicated hardware with all games built in. The first game console to use this format was the Fairchild Channel F; however, the Atari 2600 is credited with making the plug-in concept popular among the game-playing public.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is nostalgic fun March 14, 2012

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This is a great system to get. These systems have been around for awhile and are still fun today. There are many versions of this system like the heavy sixer, Sears heavy sixer, light sixer, Sears light sixer, the 4 switch, the Sears 4 switch, the darth vader black 4 switcher, 2600 jr., and the Coleco gemini. There are also ways to play games for this system on other system like the 5200, 7800, and colecovision. The older ones have a built in rf cable so you will have to have a manual switch-box or something else. Most of the games are very cheap and games like pac-man are dirt cheap. Try to get a system with a lot of games so you do not have to get them seperately and you will pay less for shiping. Besides Atari joysticks and paddles other controllers will work too like the Sega Genesis controller or Colecovision controller. They work well and have many fun games like Pitfall!, Video Olympics, Defender, Missile Comand, Asteroids, Berzerk, Spiderman, Q-bert, Pitfall 2 lost caverns, Pole Postion, and so many more. If you want to relive moments from your childhood or want to experiance your parents joy then buy an Atari 2600 VCS and get ready to travel back to 1977 and later. Have fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite System March 5, 2011
By Jordan
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
The original Atari 2600 is my favorite system and #1 on MY list. I reccomend this system to anyone who's interested in the history of home video gaming or anyone who enjoyed arcades when they were younger, they would love this system with its arcade based like games. Atari 2600 is still the only system that sold millions of consoles in two decades, the longest run of any game system to date. In the early 80s there wasn't a home that didn't own at least one Atari 2600.
The game library is the largest for any system ever made having well over 1,000 titles because anyone who could put a program together could have it released for the Atari and because of that the game market crashed in 84 due to an over saturation in games and actually all game systems and games appeared to be dead, but Atari 2600 survived and continued sales into the early 90s. Anyone who's owned one knows how fun these machines really are even though the graphix are nothing like todays games, but that's also what makes them fun because it gives you the ability to use your imagination. Gradually, but surely todays kids are discovering and really getting into the whole retro gaming experience and they're finding out about Atari and have started buying up the old sytems and collecting the games that are now quite sought after and could go for a pretty penny when coupled with its instructions still in the factory sealed box.
I love my Atari 2600 and play it almost everyday. I really enjoy collecting the games for it. I actually play Atari more than I play my other systems. If YOU don't have the system that started the whole gaming revolution, GET ONE, I promise you won't regret it. Here's where you'll find it, GET IT NOW! While the prices are still affordable because as these things become more of a classic by the day, the more they're prices seem to climb.----> Atari 2600 - Video Game Console

1.0 out of 5 stars extremely disappointing January 7, 2013
Verified Purchase
Very much NOT as advertised. Supposd to be in complete working order with all necessary cords, etc. to hook up and play immediately. This seller also knew this was my husband's big Xmas gift this year and I contacted him directly to make sure he understood I needed a unit in top working order so we could play it on Xmas morning. Needless to say, the unit was broken and didn't play at all. Maybe it was the fact the seller just threw it and the five games into a priority box with absolutely NO padding to protect this delicate electronic equipment. Not so much as one piece of bubble wrap! The games were all banging against each other and the unit. I was beside myself with worry when it arrived and had to wait until Xmas morning when my husband unwrapped it and hooked it up to find out it was broken. Fortunately, my husband is very much an electronics nerd and after several days of working on it, fixing some broken things and replacing others, he finally got it to the point where it will play. You still have to turn the on and off switch about 25 times to get the game to pop into color though. So now he needs to replace that switch too. This seller is not to be believed. How can anyone mail something this delicate without any padding??? Don't buy from this guy!

The system works great. Would have been 5 stars, but was supposed to be here between Jan. 27th and Feb. 4th. Didn't arrive until Feb. 10th. Not in time for my anniversary, so turned into a V-Day gift. Hubby loves it!
