Product Description

Atari 5200 SuperSystem, or simply the Atari 5200, is a video game console that was introduced in 1982 by Atari as a replacement for the famous Atari 2600. The 5200 was created to compete with the Mattel Intellivision, but wound up more directly competing with the ColecoVision shortly after its release. A number of design flaws had a serious impact on usability, and the system is generally considered a failure. The 5200 was heavily based on Atari's existing 400/800 computers and the internal hardware was almost identical. However, a number of issues (aside from the lack of a keyboard) meant that software was not directly compatible between the two systems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Atari's BIG BEAST !, June 18, 2009
This review is from: Atari 5200 - Video Game Console (System)
The Atari 5200 Supersystem...sounds awesome right? guess what it is!

this was intended as Atari's successor to the atari 2600 system. the 5200 was basically a repackaged atari computer, with a souped up graphics processor and sound upgrades. its design was sleek and stylish(the design worked because they retained it for the 7800 also)

i still remeber seeing the commercials for this and was floored..the 5200's version of pac man that came with the console has to still be one of the best home versions of the classic. sometimes Nothing beats a good game of 5200 pac man!

sure, it was expensive when it was released...i remember my neighbor got one for christmas and his mom was griping at how much it costed..it was over 200 dollars.. back then that was a lot for a gaming system but now compared to the playstation3 and xbox360 its not that bad.

there was a atari 2600 add on they made also but was never sold ( shame)

the 5200 had a lot going for it..until those INFAMOUS controllers came to light. sure, atari made a innovative choice to make analog controllers, but the problem was that they always kept breaking down..they were not self centering but on a plus side it was the first gaming system to offer a pause feature..which was a lifesaver sometimes, if your bothered during the middle of a game.

i got my 5200 a few years ago and went through many controllers until i finally traded up and bought a rebuilt one, and its working fine now...one rule..if you buy a 5200 and those controllers break..your system is down...take extra care with those controllers.

sure people rip on the 5200, but it wasnt a bad system..in fact when you get a few glitches fixed its a lot of fun!

some of the best games have to be..Pac man, galaxian, frogger, moon patrol, among others.

sure its HUGE and a BEAST..but thats part of the charm of the 5200 its an 80s system all the way! if you can find one...its worth it.
