Customer Reviews

Makes playing Atari games on the iPad much easier.

If they'd put 6-8 buttons, a track ball, a dial, and a port so it can be a dock/charger I'd easily pay double.

This has to be one of the worst piles of junk ever made.

IMPORTANT: download the free "Atari's Greatest Hits" app on iTunes and try it out before purchasing this accessory for your iPad (this is the only app that supports this device).

I thought this might be like a more affordable version of the iCade, but when I received it, I was very disappointed. Here are some important details to consider (caveat emptor):

1. This is a one-app accessory - there are no indications that this will ever be supported by other developers or even future apps from Atari.
2. Only portrait mode games are supported, landscape games cannot be played (and the Atari's Greatest Hits app does not give you an option to switch between portrait and landscape - each game is either only portrait or only landscape).
3. Most cases for the iPad will have to be removed in order to place the iPad on the device.
4. Atari's Greatest Hits only has one free game (Missile Command), otherwise you need to make additional in-app purchases of $0.99 for a 4 pack of games or $9.99 for all "99 games."
5. Many of the "99 games" are Atari 2600 games, only around 25% of them are arcade games (from 80's era).
6. This controller does not require separate power - it is powered from the iPad. However, that also means that it is not possible to charge the iPad while it is attached.

I knew about 4-6 before buying and 3 is not unexpected, but 1 and 2 (especially 2) make the iCade a much better purchase, even at a higher price.

This does exactly what it promises. I love being able to use the old-school controller to play the old-school games. It was worth it for Adventure and Tempest alone! Highly recommended accessory for your iPad Atari games!

But you have to spend even more money once you get it to buy games. Mildly disappointed about that. Otherwise it seems to be made well and plays like a champ.

Plenty of fun as is, but more fun to make your own games for. I couldn't find an SDK so I made one. The hardware was fairly straightforward so I posted an example of how to use it at [...]

As someone that grew up on Atari 2600 games, this brought back so many memories! Now only the old school joystick, but the games themselves were a blast from the past and it delivers exactly what I thought that it would. I do wish that more games came with this up front and that you did not have to pay extra for them, but even though this is the case, the game play that this provides was a ton of fun and the games were were the extra expense in my opinion, and the extra $9.99 for 100 games will not break most banks. All-in-all this is a fun system that will bring you back to your childhood, but also will allow your kids to see games as they were when we were young. They may not completely appreciate some of the low graphic ones (compared to what they have today), but they will appreciate you sharing and spending time with them and letting them better know what it was like when you were young!

Classic Games on the iPad are not fun or easy without a joystick. For the early 8bits like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong that only need the stick and button or two this is fine. Hopefully the designers read these reviews and update the product. Here's my beefs:

- The stick and the buttons are unnecessarily CLICKY/KLACKY. It's BAD. I only have time to play at night and I rarely can because it will wake up anyone. Have the designers ever been to an Arcade? Who thought that would be a good idea??
- Why is this not a dock? Seriously, people.
- Only 4 buttons rules out Defender Mortal Combat etc

Hey, it's $40. A good start but don't think it's going be the solve-all. Feels like a cheap way for them to test the market. If they'd put 6-8 buttons, a track ball, a dial, and a port so it can be a dock/charger I'd easily pay double.

Call me, Atari. I got more.

Brings back old memories. You need to purchase the games however it was $9.99 for 100 of them so a very fair price. Purchasing games was a little cumbersome, however. Otherwise it works great and is a lot of fun!
