Ateco #701 Cake Decorating Set

I have used Ateco before and do love their products, but I do want to say that I was surprised when the item arrived. Amazon showed the picture of a box, which is what my mother had. But the "newer" product does not come in the box but instead comes in a plastic case. It is still the same great product but I just wanted to give a warning first. That box must be from the 70's when my mother purchased it.

The Ateco tube is wonderful for decorating cakes. If I used a bag, the warmth of my hands would make the frosting "runny" and I would have to put it in the fridge to get it to harden. With the tube you don't have to worry about that. Plus, when I used bags they would always leak. The tube never leaks.

This is the same type of decorator I learned on in college cake decorating class. I like this style of decorator. Easier for me than using the bags, I guess if I had a complaint, it would be wish it could hold more icing.

This decorator will hold less than half a tub of frosting, so I don't know what kind of miniature cake they are showing it next to. I can't imagine what a pain it will be to reload such a narrow tube. Also, it is NOT the product shown!!!! The one you will receive has less sturdy looking plastic rings and comes in an ugly clear plastic disposable quality clamshell case. I could have bought the same thing at Walmart or Michael's crafts, but it does look like it will do the job and be a fair value. My 10 year old was happy to receive it (though not as thrilled as she would have been with a nicer box) and is looking forward to using it to decorate.

I have the set pictured. I love it and wanted one as a gift for my daughter. The set I received is not in the box pictured. It came packaged in plastic so I cannot even open it to look at it. All of the parts in my set are metal - except for the "plunger" disk. This one has a metal handle and possibly a metal tube. (I don't know because I can't open it and still give it as a gift or return it.) I am concerned that the plastic screw parts on this new set will not last. (I have not had good luck with plastic parts keeping their threads.) I probably would have not purchased this had I known it was mostly plastic. Alas, it was the only tube decorator that I could find.

The product is ok, however, the plunger is made of a hard plastic and has some cracking tendencies. Otherwise it is of good quality.

Not as picured, but the kit was complete and wife likes the small size for decorating small cakes and cookies.

I purchased this product some months ago and yesterday had the first experience of using it.

I was disappointed to see that the hard plastic plunger disc was already
cracked when I opened the package for the first time. The metal rod, already inserted in the disc, must put too much pressure on the plastic, because this had never been used before, it was still in the original plastic clamshell package. I was still able to decorate my cake but am wondering how long before the plunger disc cracks on the other side from the pressure of use. At present the crack runs from the metal rod to the outside of the disc on one side.

I'm thinking the disc needs to be metal with maybe a silicone layer to make it seal tightly. Before this kit, I had used one of a similar design that was "all plastic" for at least 30 years. It's plunger disc finally broke and I needed a replacement. So sad this one was cracked before I ever used it. Everything else included looks like it will hold up well, so I may order another to see if I get one that is not flawed. I cannot use a bag decorater.

My mother-in-law made wedding cakes and other cakes professionally and only ever used this type of decorator. I dislike using the decorating bags as I find them messy but this decorator is easy to use and easy to clean.

Just a friendly warning. I got this item today, and it isn't packaged at all like the picture shows (therefore not what I expected). It's packaged in plastic (not a box), and the canister is a different color than in the picture. I haven't actually used it yet, and I'm still debating whether I will keep it. If I do decide to keep and use it I will update my review on how it actually works. I just wanted to let others know what to expect (or not to expect as the case may be) in order not to be taken by surprise when they get this.

I have been looking for a solid cake decorating kit and up until now have been unsuccessful in finding one. This is the same set my mother has had for years and it is the best out there. It was always reliable and much easier to use than the disposable ones bag sets. I just placed an order for one and if anything is different (other than the packaging) I will be sure to update this review.
