Book Description

October 3, 2003
Based upon a true story, The Atheist Priest is a truly remarkable piece of literature. From the title to its contents, we are provoked to an intellectual discussion and forced to test the limits of the human heart. Where two small words fused together can offend and enlighten simultaneously. Fyodor Dostoevsky once pontificated "Without God, everything is possible." However, in The Atheist Priest, this theological notion is challenged to the very core. However, even the devout atheist can not take refuge in this book. That there is an ultimate choice to our existence: shall I live a moral life or not? Throughout the ages, philosophy and theology assumed the answer. Yet, The Atheist Priest reflects and chooses from its reflection. This is the post-modern soul: naked, stripped, and unblemished by tradition and dogma. The post-modern soul has choices and the choices are boundless. . .

5.0 out of 5 stars Both an atheist and a priest? They're not contradictory., July 7, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Atheist Priest (Paperback)
This book is both a timeless piece exposing the hypocrisy of the catholic church and a timely piece in the midst of numerous recent scandals.

Recent news headlines tell us about:
1. bishops denying the sacrament of the eucharist to gay rights supporters
2. a bishop behaving most unchristian in a hit and run accident
3. clergy out of touch with the reality of birth control and abortion
4. scandalous sexual abuse cases
The list goes on.

The atheist priest isn't a part of any of that. On the contrary, the athiest priest behaves more christian than most who profess the faith. No, he IS more christian, not just behaves so!

While this book covers some controversial topics, it ultimately uplifts with the reader with reassurance that humanity and christianity will prevail, even though the current manifestation of the church and its version of christianity might not.

Bravo to the author Pierce! About time someone spoke of the priest scandal with boys in such an honest and provocative manner! It is rather amazing that the atheist priest was actually more christian than most christians are! It is a VERY good book! Filled with wisdom and raw courage! Bravo!!

Now, the Pope, Bishops and priests need to read it and learn from it!

Dr. Pierce has written in a wonderful way about provocative topics not often addressed. This book should be read, read again, and passed along to everyone...Especially the Pope and most Bishops. So very timely, too.
