Book Description

January 1988 Vol I of the Last Legacy
Atheling: Anglo-Saxon for prince. 2047. Earth is dying after nuclear wars. As a new arms race builds, Pylar Fazhakian, an elderly leader of an Armenian mystic sect, appears at a Palo Alto defense installation claiming to have data that will give Pan-America advantage over the other two main world blocs. But Fazhakian-the Hesikastor-has more than secret codes. As Ellisen, the Pan-American leader checks him out, he links psychically with beings on Phrynis in the Pleiades system, a possible refuge for Earth survivors. As a new race begins to seek out the planet's coordinates, its history unfolds through the Hesikastor's mind. The link is not an idle one: there is an agenda. Torc, the atheling, undergoes a token spiritual journey which changes him from a callow, macho heir to a brutal throne into a thoughtful, idealistic seeker whose crown is thereby at risk even before he puts it on. His struggles on Phrynis mirror Ellisen's as that one wrestles with his conscience over the fate of war-torn Earth.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

After several young-adult novels, Chetwin weighs in with the first volume of a tetralogy called The Last Legacy. A framing story depicts a postholocaust Earth whose inhabitants, having learned nothing from history, are moving toward a second nuclear war. Most of the book, though, is devoted to the planet Phrynis, a familiar medieval fantasy world where ideas of democracy are undermining the ancient Gnangar dynasty's hold on the country of Gurnyac. More immediately, aging king Sharroc is murdered while his heir, Torc, is on a traditional religious retreat. Scenes at the latter community are at the heart of this installment, as the selfish, impulsive prince learns a measure of humility, empathy and control. Given the overall didactic intent and the limited effort at novelistic detail in character, story or setting, this reads like an overlong parable.

From Library Journal

As the governments of Earth approach a secondand perhaps finalnuclear holocaust, an old man known for his psychic visions receives images from a faraway world where the result of a blood-war between princes seems to hold the key to the peace of both worlds. Chetwin's first novel features a double storyline with separate but equal portions of sf and fantasy, resulting in an uneasy mixture that may blend as the series progresses. Libraries may wish to wait for the sequel before purchasing. JC

5.0 out of 5 stars The Nuclear Solution, July 15, 2000
This review is from: The Atheling (Paperback)
In the year 2047, earth has been ravaged by a limited nuclear war and is now divided between Pan America and the Sino Soviet power bloc.

But in space there is a tyrant with the power to overcome both or shift the balance of power in either direction. On earth there is an ancient anit-war leader with psi vision of a planet linked to ours.

But full scale nuclear war could destroy both before the path to human salvation is found.

A thought provoking book that looks at human politics and human folly that could be our future.
