Complete your Athena Audition surround system or augment your current stereo or left/center/right listening system with Athena Technologies' compact and versatile AS-R1 bi-pole rear-channel surround speaker. The bi-pole design radiates sound in 2 directions (3 counting the woofer), throwing a diffuse and spacious aural environment for your surround-sound movies and music. Designed for wall mounting, the AS-R1 includes a built-in mounting system as well as an insert that accommodates an optional Macromount bracket for additional setup flexibilty. The speaker is sold singly, so be sure to pick up 2 or more, depending on your needs.

For placement, the AS-R1 should be raised to a height of approximately 6 feet and should ideally have a space of at least 6 feet between them. The compact yet full-bodied speaker offers a frequency response that extends down to 80 Hz. The silver-finished AS-R1 is recommended for use with any Audition or SCT Series product. It comes with a removable, wraparound black cloth grille.

These are made to match the B1 speakers that are often recommended as one of the best in it's price range. The B1s have an incredible amount of bass and treble for the price and while they are not "audiophile quality" (whatever that is) they are certainly very good for the price. I should sell my B1s since I have two sets of more expensive speakers, but am reluctant to do it.

The R1s - seem to match the B1s well. No drop in quality from the B1s that I can tell.

The newer B1.2 and AS-R1.2 are supposedly the same as Athena did not feel the need to change this line any (said one executive). There is some talk that the larger speakers (F series) were made less heavy and therefore maybe less in quality, but it is not clear yet I believe.

By the way - when I first wrote this review I was also selling my pair to get a more expensive and better sounding pair. They sold long ago and I still feel the same as I did back then.
