Editorial Reviews

'The great strength of this guidebook ... is the detail in relation to the well known sites ... and the inclusion of many more in the area ... This makes it an extremely useful work of reference.' - Minerva

'Purchase a copy for the school library ... and relive the real experiences which it enhanced.' - JACT Review

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Jon Corelis on April 28, 2006
Format: Hardcover
Note: this review is based on the 2001 hardback edition.

An excellent overview of most ancient and some major medieval sites within a day's travel of Athens, written with unquestioned scholarly competence but clearly enough to be accessible to the nonspecialist. The one thing I missed was a comprehensive map showing all the sites instead of just the major ones, which would make planning a trip easier. Includes an extremely useful guide to the National Museum in Athens. Unfortunately, the publishers have chosen to issue this book at a price which ensures that 99% of the travelers who could benefit from it aren't going to buy it.

Update January 2012. Though I won't change the rating, there are two developments since my original review that should be noted. First, the book now must be considered to be significantly obsolete in that it has no section on the New Acropolis Museum; an updated edition including this is badly needed. Second, apparently the price, if I recall correctly, has risen to an even more outrageous figure than before.

Update April 2013: there is now a paperback available in Britain (try amazon uk) for a much lower price. So far, I haven't seen it listed by a US vendor, but it's so much cheaper than this hardback that it will probably cost you considerably less even including shipping. This paperback edition is dated 2008; I believe the New Acropolis Museum was opened in 2009, so presumably the new edition still doesn't include it.
