(4) IMDb 7.6/10

Led by the success of the B-52's and R.E.M., Athens, Georgia was the most happening music scene in the country by the mid 80's/ Following several different bands from different genres, this film paints Athens as a magical artistic environment where bands are not in competition, but co-exist in harmony. Live performances of R.E.M.'s "Swan Swan H" and "Dream (All I Have To Do)" at the Lucy Cobb Institute chapel are included. Also featured are performances and interviews frm the B-52's, Pylon, B-B-Que Killers, Time Toy, Jim Herbert, Flat Duo Jets, Love Tractor, Kilkenny Cats, Squalls, and more.

I've been checking various places for this album/movie for years. I had a copy of the soundtrack on cassette in the 80's and listened to it nonstop. And I couldn't find the movie anywhere for the longest time.

Now they're both available on amazon! Yay! The movie isn't spectacular, but if you like the music you should find it entertaining. Or if, like me, you've been listening to the soundtrack for 20 years, and never saw the movie, then seeing the movie is a great treat. Suddenly all those detached voices are attached to real people!

If you know and remember these bands, this is just wonderful nostalgia. But even if you never heard any of the acts, it's an important, albeit imperfect slice of American music history. The sound of Athens resonated across pop music from College Radio (soon to be known as "Alternative") to MTV and beyond. Some of the bands stayed unknown and others exploded. Like Seattle in the early 90s, Athens was "that" place.

Great fun...

I saw an interview with 10,000 Maniac's Dennis Drew from 1987. The interviewer wanted to know about "The Athens, GA
Scene". Dennis said there "was no scene" anymore. The bands and clubs from "that scene" were gone. Once a scene is seen,
there's change;usually not for the best. This documentary may be the general public's only way to witness what "was". Enjoyable,
well done, and full of humor. Had a "college rock" you were there feel. Was lucky to catch REM's Murmur Tour when it
stopped at Bengal Gymnasium at Buffalo State College in April 1983 while a college student. The band opened for The English
Beat of all people!
